Just saw something like this at work. We could ping <a class="postlink" href="http://www.cnn.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.cnn.com</a> or <a class="postlink" href="http://www.yahoo.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.yahoo.com</a>, etc but not get to it using IE. If we ran the troubleshooter it said it made HTTP and HTTPS connections to microsoft. IE just wouldn't get there. Nothing in the hosts file, all the IP settings were right, nothing on port 80. HijackThis didn't show anything, a little port utility didn't show anything open on those ports, malware checks didn't show anything out of the ordinary. I tried running portable Firefox off of a flash drive and it worked fine so we just slapped Firefox on the machine. It was a personal machine and not a work machine so we didn't waste a lot of time on it, but I didn't see anything obvious.

Oh we reset all the IE settings to default also. Not sure what else to tell you to try but yeah, it was bizarre.

Just got done trying this, didn't work. All of the commands successfully ran, but I still couldn't run Windows Update

Also, I installed Firefox but that didn't work either. Can't open up websites in Firefox or IE. Installing SP3 didn't help either. I also retraced my steps to make sure I wasn't missing something completely obvious either.

At this I'm going to go digging around in my company's firewall to make sure that there aren't any entries that might be blocking this computer's access to the internet.

So this is exactly what it was. Thanks for the suggestions though guys; now I have another issue I have to resolve because of this but that's not exactly strictly technically related.

Right, so it seems that every time I move this goddamn computer somewhere it decides to stop working.

I plugged everything in, fired it up, and it never POSTed. I suspected one of my RAM sticks was the issue (I have a Mushkin pair and Corsair pair, the Mushkin is older and 1/2 went bad a few months ago), so I pulled out the Mushkin stick and the computer posted.

New problem: It gets past the BIOS screen, goes to devices and everything screen with the blinking underscore, and then holds there and I get this message:

    Code:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
Wonderful. I don't have the system disk (I'm running Windows 7). The computer boots up the Memtest from a CD I had in there fine, and I'm burning Ubuntu as we speak to see if I can access the hard drive. I reset all the related connections, moved some around and also tried running just the main drive by itself, no dice. The hard drive is from around December 2008? I think it's about 2 1/2 years old.

[edit] I tried resetting all the connections a second time and it fired up. Stupid thing, I need a new one of these.

Error means the bootable disk is fucked. Check your sata/ide cable connections and power cycle the machine with 30 seconds unplugged. If you still have the same fault than either data corruption on the drive of physical disk failure. Recover your data to an external drive using a LIVE cd if you can and then try reinstalling the OS. If you're hearing a clicking and whirring sound when the drive spins up - excellent chance the disk is fucked.

    Hey guys,

My computer unexpectedly shut off while I was lugging it around and I got a message telling me that one of the .exe files was corrupted. It also told me that I should run Chkdsk to see what is up. I have no idea what the following means.

Run chkdsk with the /F switch and let it go - it'll take a long time.

It should fix the errors, if it does not fix them, it will report that it hasn't fixed them.

A dirty volume means it wasn't cleanly unmounted (i.e. shutdown). It's not that uncommon to get errors, you just have to allow chkdsk to fix them.

I'd really appreciate anybody that can help me with a Toshiba laptop that is currently not working. It is almost brand new and was in working condition until it was plugged in during a thunderstorm where the power was continuously going on and off. Now it wont even turn on. The power source is working and so is the HDD. I would like to know what steps can be taken to determine the damage.

Really, you won't be able to test much unless you take it apart, and even then, you may not be able to test much.

You could have blown capacitors on the motherboard, which may or may not be visible (blown caps can look blown and/or be leaking fluid, but they can be blown and not look it as well). You could have toasted resistors which will likely look burnt. It could be something more subtle like a chip that got fried...

If you are particularly industrious, feel free to take it apart and look for something obviously wrong - it doesn't require an EE degree to see when a resistor has a black scorch mark. You can test resistance or capacitance with a good multimeter but it's hard to test individual components without de-soldering them since it's going to be measuring the whole circuit.

Most of the components are soldered onto the motherboard, so you won't get a lot of flexibility unless you really want to start replacing electrical components yourself. You'll probably have to replace the motherboard. A shop will be able to take it apart, diagnose it and tell you if it's just the motherboard or something else. Or, if you're morally flexible, you could always call Toshiba and claim ignorance, just stating that your new laptop won't boot.

Is there a way to pull recorded episodes off my Verizon FIOS DVR and onto my computer?

    Some info about my PC:
    Windows 7 Professional 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo 3ghz E6850
    8gb RAM, forget the brand/type
    Nvidia GeForce 8800GT

Had this PC for 3 and a half years, never had an issue. A week ago, while browsing this site, the PC froze up and the screen became discolored and had black and grey vertical lines all over it and some other artifacts I cannot recall. Rebooted and it worked fine. Yesterday, the same thing happened and again a reboot was fine. I updated the drivers which at first failed to install but they worked fine on the second attempt. PC worked fine but last night right as I was about to shut it up, it happened again. This morning whenever I turn it on, the screen boots up all fucked up looking and the resolution is stuck to the minimum (this is a 22 inch monitor), and the picture is extremely discolored with numerous horizontal lines going through. Here are some pictures I took with my phone:

    <a class="postlink" href="http://imageshack.us/g/24/imag0102r.jpg/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://imageshack.us/g/24/imag0102r.jpg/</a>

Any idea what the problem could be? I am assuming it is the video card going bad, but I really don't want that to be the case since I'm poor as shit right now. I used a different monitor, checked for viruses, reseated the graphics card and nothing is coming close to overheating temperatures (the tower is also dust-free). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost guaranteed that is a video card issue.

One way to rule it out would be to get one of the Linux live cds and boot up to that. That will rule out a software issue if the same distortion happens there: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.livecdlist.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.livecdlist.com/</a>

Good luck. Perhaps you can find a replacement card on Craigslist in the meantime. Some bigger cities in the US also have Goodwill computer stores.

I agree, most likely a video card issue. I had a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS made by EVGA in my desktop with similar specs. The same thing happened to me about a year and a half ago. Ended up RMAing the card to EVGA and they replaced it with a 9800.

    I guess the video card is fucked then. I've shopped around a bit and I'm looking at the Sapphire Radeon HD6850: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908&cm_re=6850-_-14-102-908-_-Product" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product</a>

My only concern is, will this be compatible with my current motherboard, an asus p5n-e sli? Looking at it, I believe the video card slot is only a pciex1_1 (at least, that's what is written on the mobo itself next to the slot. This 6850 is shown as a PCI Express 2.1 x16 and I don't know if it'd work out. If not, I need to continue looking for the most powerful card I could get that would work with this motherboard...

Dude, did you maybe try to Google your motherboard's part number?

pciex1_1 is an identifier. If you search for your motherboard's part number, the VERY FIRST RESULT is to the Asus website with a full spec for your motherboard including the fact that it has two PCI Express x16 slots.

I get coming and asking people for information when they know more than you. I don't get simply ignoring the multitude of resources at your disposal. That just seems like laziness to me.

Somewhat interesting article on why WiFi dies, and potentially how to diagnose and fix the problems: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/367672/whats-killing-your-wi-fi" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/367672/ ... your-wi-fi</a>

I have a problem. My ps3 has been banished to the garage man cave by my significant other. Not that big of a deal I've got a 37 in ch LCD out there. My problem is my internet signal is to weak to run live out there. Will buying a better router fix this? If so any recommendations?

Are you running a long ethernet cable out to it? If that's the case, then just buy the cheapest switch you can find, and use two cables, with that switch in the middle.

You can get them for as little as $15 or so.

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156066&cm_re=switch-_-33-156-066-_-Product" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product</a>

Sounds like you are talking wireless signal.

You could also add an access point if you have an ethernet jack closer to the PS3. If not, you could try higher gain antennas: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_20?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hi+gain+wifi+antenna&x=0&y=0&sprefix=hi+gain+wifi+antenna" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_ ... fi+antenna</a>

    I've never used one, but a wifi repeater might help: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/Engenius-802-11g-Repeater-Superior-Cover/dp/B003WJ8DU0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.com/Engenius-802-11g- ... B003WJ8DU0</a>
