The laptop that I accidentall infected seems to be fine. I ran a ton of different programs and it appears that Combofix has removed the boot.tidserv trojan. Norton no longer pops up telling me it's there when it consistently did so before. I re-scanned with almost 10 programs and each one came up clean. I was using Malwarebytes, tdsskiller, combofix, norton, norton power eraser, and a few others I can't recall off the top of my head. Nothing would detect the virus except for Norton. According to what I found on Google, this damn thing replicates a Norton file so when it detects it, it is unable to remove it and for some reason it is so well hidden that most other programs don't find it. My main computer that had the virus with the bootup issues is still having the same issues. It won't boot up at all but I can access the files when I use a cable to turn it into an external HDD on another working computer. I forced it into safe mode several times and tried all the different basic options and nothing would work. Windows startup repair also failed as well as system restore and other methods. I read that this virus really messes up the master boot record which would explain all this. My problem now is that I don't want to connect this hdd to another working one because the virus may spread again. I'm trying to clean the HDD out using a really old computer but it is extremely slow and I'm having trouble figuring out how to run Combofix (pretty sure this is what removed the trojan) on an external drive that isn't C:. So now my situation is trying to fix my unbootable HDD from my primary computer without yet formating it.
I'm putting this in both this and the Audio/Visual thread, since I'm not sure which was best to try and get a response, but here goes... I have a 55" Samsung LCD (model LN55B650 for reference) and recently I've been having an issue with the picture. Randomly, the picture will dim slightly and there's a noticeable... jutter, is a the word I suppose I would use to describe it? Sometimes it's much more pronounced and noticeable than others, but it seems to be becoming more and more frequent in occurrence. At first I thought maybe it was just signal degradation from my shitty cable provider, or maybe even my HDMI cable, but the same thing happens when I use my Wii or my DVD player. I've also tried messing with all of the different settings on the TV and still can't seem to figure out what the root cause is. I'm hoping somebody out there has a small idea of what the hell I'm talking about and can offer some insight. Thanks.
This cartoon has been driving me nuts since Netdaddy posted it. It makes me really, really, want to have a discussion on password security.
Actually, I've had a ton of PM's asking about online security and stuff, so I'll create a thread about that where people can ask about and offer advice.
Without going into a lot of detail (I'll save it for Netdata's upcoming thread), the dichotomy most people have between perceived security threats and real security threats. In addition the amount of people who want to question my organization's information security policies (I created most of them) without knowing my organization is quite annoying.
So I picked up 2 HP Touchpads during this weekend's fire sale. One is going to be a birthday gift for my mum. The other I might keep for myself. If people here see news about how to load Honeycomb onto it on some other board or in some article, I'd appreciate a link. Thanks.
I always question the rationalle of buying something that us EOL before it hits the shelf. Sure, it's cheap. But what about when shut doesnt work in a month?
Hp is standing by the warranty. So app support will suck and OS updates nonexistent, but if it functions okay as-is, it's a screaming deal. Pretty good chance the Android community will get Android running on it too. A 1.3ghz dual core ten inch Android tablet for $100? Yes, please.
A user on our Windows 2008 terminal server is having problems with her mouse cursor disappearing while in Outlook on her secondary monitor. Apparently, the fix to this is to disable the "Hide Pointer While Typing" option under the control panel. The problem is that I can't seem to find a registry entry or GPO that corresponds to this particular option on the server. Googling hasn't been much help. Is there was anybody out there that could point me to a script or registry hack that would get this fixed? Thanks!
Can anyone recommend an online video ripper? Something like keepvid? I've been trying to use it, but it isn't working, and if anyone knows any other sites like it I'd appreciate it.
Anyone know why I receive double texts on my Iphone4? I've read that if someone sends a text in low reception areas you can receive double texts but I get them on every text. Also, how can I stop getting peoples check-ins from facebook? I've disabled all facebook updates on my phone but still get check-ins.
After a short break from having tech issues, guess who's back? I have a DSL connection that lost it's physical signal for several hours yesterday. It's come back online since, but keeps going out for a few minutes here and there. Additionally, even after software reboot and power cycling, I'm only getting 1/3-1/2 of my promised speed, even though my ping to google is showing only 19ms. I am however showing intermittent lag of up to 1000ms to the VoIP program I use, and my output is crackly and skips to the point where I can't be understood. The ONLY thing that has changed since the onset of this issue is that my service company installed service for two neighboring apartment units yesterday. My service has wireless capability which I do not have enabled, so there shouldn't be any channel interference. My question is, can anyone suggest what specifically might have happened with the installations or anything else to cause this, and is there anything I can do on my end to fix it? If possible, I'd prefer to avoid any chance of AT&T trying to fuck me on a service charge, or at the very least, when the tech shows up, be able to say, "Hey, you might want to look at X possibility."
I have a Dell inspiron 530. Windows isn't booting up, and I'm getting the "No boot device available" message. Please tell me the hard drive is not fried.
Most likely we'd be lying. Could be a bunch of things - but your computer can't find a boot device, which could be bios settings, friend mobo, busted controller, or just a cable wiggled loose. But probably means the HD is dead. If you have a geek friend who can pop the case and have a look, or check your BIOS settings - probably for the best. but don't get your hopes up. It's a 4 year old desktop that didn't get particularly good reviews when it was new. You got a pretty good run.
Also, make sure you don't have a USB storage device plugged in, like an external hard drive or a thumb drive.
Try something like ultimate boot cd or a linux live disk to scan your hdd. There's a small chance that your partition table is messed up, but that's most likely not the case unless you've been messing around with it yourself.
There's also Spinrite (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm</a>) though it's not free
I'm thinking about signing up for a month or two at a uhh .... members only content delivery site. When you sign up you can download and keep as many of the videos from the site as you want within your membership window - so if I want too, It's entirely kosher with the site owners to trawl the entire site, download every video and keep it on hand afterward. But I don't particularly want to do that manually. Other than Teleport Pro/Ultra from Tenmax - does anyone know a good solution for crawling a webpage and harvesting all the files of a certain type (IE I want all the .wmv files that are linked anywhere on the site)? Clearly, needs to be able to handle basic authentication tasks.
