GAAAH, I hate computers. When I try to go to amazon.com, I get a "Wiki does not exist" error with a bunch of text/links in many different languages. Flushed the DNS on my computer...any other suggestions? Googling it seems to bring up different results, and when it comes to reconfiguring my router I have no idea how to do that.
It's likely to be malware of some kind. Things you can do: Check your add/remove programs, make sure there's nothing weird in there. Run a malware scanner like <a class="postlink" href="http://www.malwarebytes.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.malwarebytes.org</a>. Go into a command prompt (start > run > "cmd") and type "ipconfig /all" and paste the output here. Open My Computer > C: > Windows > System32 > Drivers > Etc, and open the "hosts" file with Notepad. There should only be two entries and they should both say "localhost."
Two things: when I run ipconfig I can't highlight the output to copy/paste, the the output is too large for a print screen. Also, after "drivers" which folder do I pick? There are three (all have subfolders in them) and lots of random files, none of them labelled "hosts".
Right click on the command prompt and select "Mark" - that will let you highlight to copy. Hit enter to copy the text you've highlighted. Then you can paste it as normal into a text file or browser or whatever. Also, "Etc" wasn't me saying "keep following this directory path" - there should actually be a folder called "etc" under "drivers." That will contain the hosts file.
The problem, which was not fixed by a system restore, a restart or deleting the browser cache, seems to have resolved itself by simply being left alone all night. GAAAH. Hate computers. Thanks for the help, binary. If/when it happens again I'll do everything that you're saying.
It's possible that your service provider was having problems with their DNS servers, and it wasn't actually a problem with your computer at all. Glad it's fixed, though!
If your concerned in the future about your ISP's DNSes shitting the bed, you can change your local DNS to OpenDNS - might help resolve some things 208.67.220.220 & 208.67.222.222 are the IPs
Not sure if this is the place to put it, but I have not been satisfied with any of the answers I've found online. I'm looking to purchase a tablet. I have never owned one. I'm looking at the Asus Transformer Prime, Ipad 2, or Ipad 3. So pretty much Android vs Apple ios? I have also never owned an apple. I am pretty PC savvy, build my own computers etc. I hear the apps for Apple are better, but I don't think I'll be much of an app person. I figured I do mostly reading. However that is where the Ipad 3 comes into play with the better screen. Thanks guys.
The apps are definitely better on the iPad. If you're a computer guy, you may dislike Apple's "walled garden" approach to everything - basically, if you can't do what you want within their way of thinking and doing things, you can't do it at all. The jailbrake markets have some stuff, but it's not nearly as robust as the flexibility you have on Android. Really, it's a tough choice right now. Apple has better apps, and clearly the better screen. Android has a ton more flexibility. If you have a smartphone, I'd probably stay with the OS that's on your phone. If you have bucks to burn, the iPad 3 has a pretty awesome screen. Android tablets, though, can be had for less money - especially if you don't know exactly what you want out of the tablet, it may be worthwhile to pick up a cheaper Android tablet, see if you like it, and if you decide later you want a high dollar one, you can sell it.
You might want to consider a Playbook only in that it's way more powerful than any other tablet at the $200 price point, though the app selection is ass (this is changing as Android apps become compatible with it however) - I'd take it over spending twice the price on an android tablet - but just assess what you're going to use it for - it might fit your needs fine, and if it doesn't that's what the Transformer Prime and the iPad are for.
Alright, getting back to the LED TV debate, I've narrowed it down to this guy. But, what I don't understand is what it means when it says it's LED-LCD as opposed to just LED. I've looked a little into it and what I read was that the LCD's were taken out and swapped with an LED array. If there is no LCD in the TV anymore, then why call it that? Any last minute tips before I sign up for that amazon 0% financing and order the set? Also, I was interested in a sound bar to include and was just thinking the LG one that is recommended to keep within brand, any suggestions otherwise?
All LED TVs are LED-LCD. The LEDs aren't displaying color. They're just used for backlight. It's still an LCD TV. I'm sure that TV will be great.
I can't possibly see any reason for buying a Playbook when you can get a Kindle at the same price point and actually have a supported OS.
Asus Transformer (not Prime), refurbished for $250. Seems like a pretty good deal, especially to get your feet wet: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Eee-Pad-Transformer-Tablet-TF101-A1-10-1-Inch-Android-3-2-16GB-WiFI-/220992634856?afepn=5335869999&campid=5335869999&PID=1225267&_trksid=p1468660.m200036#ht_2045wt_1139" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Eee-Pad-Tr ... 045wt_1139</a>
To any iPad owners who are more tech-savvy then I am: why is it that, in threads like "What I'm listening to" or "All-Star YouTube" some of the posted YouTube links are viewable on the iPad, and some aren't? Any other iPad owners experience this? It shows the YouTube viewing screen, but it's all grey with a strike through line over the play button in the middle. I've never had this for any video on the YouTube site. TiB is really the only other site I access YouTube clips from, so I can't say for sure it's only with TiB. However, I have no problem with any other video from any other sources at other sites (basically, news, movie trailers and other forms of entertainment). Am I missing something here? I don't have this problem on my MacBook Pro and I've never accessed TiB from my iPhone. And I'm running the latest OS on the iPad. Thanks in advance.
Some YouTube videos are Flash, and some (many) are available through HTML5. Your iPad won't play any videos that are flash-only, or that are embedded via Flash embedding code. Most of the YouTube website plays HTML5 videos on supported browsers, but when you embed a video on a website outside of youtube.com (e.g. this site), you actually make a reference to the type of video that gets embedded. If you view the page source, you'll see the embedding code: Code: <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KAGENje0zRk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed> In this case, you can see that it's calling for x-shockwave-flash, which means it's explicitly requiring Flash content, not the iPad-compatible HTML5. An admin here would have to change the way phpBB handles the YouTube embedding in order to fix that.
What is a decent option for a TV tuner? I'd like to start recording TV onto my computer since I miss most shows working afternoons.
What OS do you have and what are you looking for? Internal tuner for a desktop, a USB tuner or a standalone set-top box? For the latter, I've heard great things about the Dreambox 800HD. I have the 500 and am pretty pleased with it. As for the other categories, I've yet to find something that works without a lot of fucking hassle. Not the hardware, but the drivers. A little over a year ago I had to review 6-7 and they all sucked. I finally settled on Hauppauge (HVR-1110) due to price and the fact that it didn't shit itself when introduced to VLC. Then again, I haven't researched any new products this since that time. Edit: Forgot to ask the most important thing: what are you going to hook up to it? Cable? Terrestrial?
I have a high end(intel 2700k gaming pc) with win7. I have 5-600 gigs of free space. I guess I don't have a preference to whether it is internal or USB, whatever happens to work the best for the money. Mainly I don't want to pay any monthly fees. Something I can just set for a channel and a time. If its able to record every new episode automatically that's a plus but not necessary. It will be for hi def cable.
Am I the only one having problems viewing this forum with Tapatalk? They did an update a week ago and 3 forums I read no longer work. No idea what happened EDIT: I wiped it off my phone and re installed it, working now.
