It's fast, and it has some very, VERY cool tech under the hood that will open up some huge potential in the next year or so (WebSockets, etc).

It's missing some of the current plug-ins that I live with in Firefox, so until they get ported over, FF is my browser of choice.

I can see me switching pretty easily though...

Faster than firefox with a nicer user interface, but with far less cool extensions. I use it on my desktop and love it, the only thing I miss is how Firefox handled RSS feeds.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, and for some reason after my computer is on for a little while Chrome likes to stutter whenever I use it; the whole thing will freeze for 1-2 seconds every 20 seconds or so. I've been scouring the internet looking for solutions, but can't find any right now.

So that's why I use Firefox.

I'm running Chrome. I made the switch after having used Firefox for years.

Firefox is a good browser, and I still use it at the office, but I prefer Chrome for the speed, interface, and memory usage. Firefox feels bloated at times and I've had issues with crashes and the memory leaks in the past, although I do miss the extensions.

Both are good browsers. It's more of a question of what your browsing needs are. Firefox is more robust and feature-rich. If you're looking for a browser that does everything for you, Firefox is your choice, provided you're not having any trouble with crashing or memory-related issues. If you prefer something faster, simpler, and cleaner, you'll be happy with Chrome.

Not too sure if this is the right thread for this question, but here goes:

Anyone ever implement anything like Chillispot? I need to change my org's free wi-fi and I'd like to use something like it. Any suggestions/recommendations/things to avoid would be appreciated.

I'm having a strange problem with a program on a computer. The program (Dragon Naturally Speaking) utilizes user profiles, and at a specific point during user setup (always the exact same point) the computer will abruptly restart. Neither re-installing the program nor rebuilding the computer solves the problem; the error still occurs. I thought this was an anomoly with a specific system, but I just ran into the same problem when using the software on a different computer. Any idea what could cause an error like this?

No idea whether anybody still cares about this, but I'm in the same boat as Nettdata. Right now, I have Adblock Plus, Download Status bar, Download Helper and Firegestures running on Firefox. Only two of those are ones I couldn't live without but till Chrome gets a decent ad blocker and a mouse gesture addon, there is no way I'm switching. After using it though, Chrome is definitely faster and loads up quicker, which is why I use it for my porn. There's also the fact that I can quickly erase the history, cache, etc. without losing anything vital.

    Adblock for Chrome
    Mouse Gestures for Chrome
The now almost a year old, private browsing/Porn mode for Firefox

I'm not trying to make an argument either way - I prefer firefox - but I'm also pretty heavily invested in the customizations I've got in place.

I use Weave, Tabmix plus, Screen Skipper, Omnibar, Memory Fox, Grease Monkey, Add This and Adblock Plus, I've got a reskinned firefox to match my desktop themes, I've got a bunch of custom user scripts in Grease Monkey, including the Cavern Links Checker. About the only thing I want firefox to do that it doesn't do to my liking is give me a nice browsable by tag view of my bookmarks.

If Feed Demon would use Firefox instead of IE as it's browser - I'd be pretty happy as well.

I could be out of date here, but aren't Chrome plugins still only for the developer/beta/something version? Also, from what read in the Adblock-like addon link you provided, it seems to be a pain to install and doesn't have great functionality. Also, I'm not clear about this, but did Firefox start out with support for addons? If so, it's a cock-up on Google's part not to come out of the gate with this stuff.

    Chrome Extension Manager

When you talk about Chrome dev builds - it's important to remember the difference between Google Dev and Microsoft Dev

Gmail left Beta less then 6 months ago, after more then 5 years in Beta with some pretty extensive pre-beta testing. Microsoft started working on Office 2010 somewhere around August when it became clear that i4i's patent infringement claim was going to hold water and they were fucked. It's available for Beta testers through MSDN now (and has been for a while) and is slated for public retail launch in june.

Microsoft pioneered the art of skipping Beta testing and just shipping Beta products as retail versions and using customer complaints as the beta testing process back in the mid 90's - they wrote books about it as a business cost management strategy and it's pretty common now through almost all of the software retail industry where brand strength is significant enough to get away with it. Google don't make money by moving changes into production early.

Yes the extension functionality in Chrome is largely dev build focused - but dev builds from Google are usually more stable then say a Microsoft Product that doesn't have any patches released to Microsoft Update yet.

I tried Google Chrome when it first came out and thought it was crap. Maybe not crap, but no where near as good as I was lead to believe. That and tabs would randomly freeze or slow down tremendously if I had 4-5 open, I constantly have more than 20 open in Firefox without any issues. That and no Flashblock. It's the greatest thing to happen to the web next to Adblock Plus. No more flashing banners and videos all trying to load and play at once, not to mention the strain on the CPU.

What's all the rave about gestures? I can't imagine using a mouse in any way would be faster or more efficient than using keyboard shortcuts.

Wow...I had no idea, everybody I know has been using Gmail for at least 2-3 years now.

Personally, I've had 10+ tabs open in Chrome (I like to multiporn) without problems. Although my sister made the same complaint, but she's using either a netbook or a 5 year old Dell laptop.

It's definitely faster to do stuff like closing/opening tabs, and switching between adjacent tabs, as well as going Backwards and Forwards (with rocker gestures) but that's mainly because most of the time, I already have the mouse in my hand. I use both keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures, but I've become so used to my mouse gestures that I'll vainly be clicking and moving the mouse while using Chrome 3 times before realizing nothing's happening.

I'm in the market for a new laptop, and thanks to the post on reliability in the laptop thread, I'm probably going with a Toshiba. Rather than go to Best Buy and the Geek Squad for some optimization I would prefer to do a clean install myself of the OS, Windows 7. The laptop at which I'm looking right now apparently comes with 7 installed alongside a huge amount of bloatware but not a hard copy of 7. My question is how do I get a copy of 7 so I can do a clean install?

The last computer I bought was an '06 desktop from Dell with XP installed. Dell sent me a re-installation disc (not an over the counter copy) when I requested one. Does anyone know if Toshiba would do the same thing? I might have to rethink my purchase if I had to purchase a copy 7 just so I don't have to deal with a manufacturer's crappy software.

I'd appreciate any advice and/or info people have on the subject.

Confirm with your vendor that your copy of Windows 7 will come with a license key valid for re installation - if it doesn't, don't buy the laptop. The vendor is Dodgy as fuck.

In 99% of cases, the key will be an OEM license that comes on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop. In which case you can just borrow a hard copy of the install media from any of your friends (or leech one from the intarwebs) and if necessary, use the ei.cfg removal utility or something like it so you can do a clean install.

License keys need to match the version listed on the install media with Windows 7 unless you use the ei.cfg utility, but if you strip that cfg file out and reburn the image - you can install any version just by selecting the option during install as long as your key matches. All licenses should support a number of re installation and reactivation regardless. And Microsoft are fairly reasonable about the whole process even if you go over the pre-coded number of activations doing re installs as long as you can demonstrate that they're all on the same physical machine - which is usually pretty easy with a laptop.

I'm using my laptop on my wireless n-router thing.

The router is in my basement. One antenna is bent at a 90 degree angle, one is straight up and down. I am in the living room approximately 4 feet above and 7 feet away from the router. The goddamn wireless disconnects all the fucking time. I am aggravated beyond belief. The router will give me signal all the way to the second floor on the opposite side of the house, so why does it keep disconnecting??

Are you sure it's the router? When you're on the opposite side of the house, does it also disconnect or just when you're in the living room? If it's working on the 2nd floor on one side of the house and not on the first on the other, I'd guess it was something interfering with the signal on that side, perhaps a cordless phone? If you're getting signal everywhere but it disconnects, then perhaps it's not the router but something with the laptop itself.

    Righty-ho.

As I said in the laptop thread, I've been trying to fix my parents laptop because it's shit the bed. I tried do a factory restore using the operating system cd, but it didn't give me any options to to do so-only to repair or re-install Windows xp.

It doesn't have a built in restore programme that you can access during boot-up either, so I was wondering about formatting the hard drive myself, then reinstalling windows and the drivers. I've found some very clear tutorials on line, but I wanted to run it by you tech-savvy peoples first.

    A number of questions:

Should I even be attempting this?

Will it wipe any virus' that may be on there (I've tried downloading Avast! and AVG to my laptop and burning them to disc, but my parents laptop refuses to let either install)?

Could I potentially fuck things up even more than they are now?

The damn thing has crashed on me several times today-what would happen if it crashed during the formatting process?

There's probably more, but that'll do for now. If anyone is willing to help me out with this, I'd be extremely grateful.

The re-install Windows XP option will, during the process, give you the option to format the hard drive.

Yes, that will remove the virus.

No, you don't have to worry about it crashing: it only crashes because it is loaded into the operating system. When you are formatting and installing, you are booting off a CD so no virus is loaded into memory.

No, it is unlikely you will fuck anything up.

You will, however, remove all of their data from the hard drive. Pictures, videos, documents, everything. If they're okay with that, I'd say go for it right now.

If they're not, buy an external hard drive, back everything up, then format the laptop and reload the operating system. Then, first thing, install antivirus like AVG or Avast!. Plug the external drive in and scan it twice, once with the antivirus program you've installed, and once with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
