Robocop is a revolutionary action film that for it's time had the most state-of-the-art special effects ever seen on film (Phil Tippet's work on ED209) as well as the bleak, oppressive future that served as a model for future action films to follow. It has been imitated in many small forms in countless films, and along with The Terminator and Die Hard it is a touchstone Hollywood action film, and a timeless legend now. Plus, as far as "art" goes it has fantastic (but dated) art direction. Don't forget it's almost 25 years old and it STILL makes a lot of modern films look anemic by comparison.
A debate of "who influenced whom" would be inappropriate, but I will leave off by saying that Blade Runner showed the bleak oppressive future long before along with Judge Dredd (albeit a comic), which if I remember correctly greatly influenced Verhoeven. I do agree with you in that the movie still holds up extremely well, and the ED-209 effects were great. But it couldn't conquer its greatest enemy Spoiler the dreaded stairs
Jesus Christ, this film looks awesome beyond belief. I CANNOT WAIT to see this. It's already starting an enormous buzz over here, and I am praying for a nation-wide release. It certainly looks like it deserves it. An Inodnesian film, too boot. Too bad the oppressive shitheel goons who run that country probably won't let their own citizens watch it.
No one said shit about TMNT being fucking high art, and yes I can bitch about it. I watched the cartoon, had the toys, dressed up like Raphael on Halloween and played the bad ass game: TNMT Turtles in Time. Its like if they made the GI-Joes come from gangbangers, Transformers built in an American factory, or Robo-Cop wasn't ever a human but 100% robot built from scratch. What's next, the Superman remake starting off with Superman coming directly from the sun? Spoiler
I fully intend on seeing The Raid. Sorry for our neighbors up north, but here is a list of the US release dates. A few cities get it this weekend, with a wider release to follow the weeks after. http://www.sonyclassics.com/theraid/dates.html
It’s a story about 4 mutated anthropogenic turtles each armed with different “ninja” weapons fighting other “ninjas” who are also armed with swords sticks etc. Tell me how you can fuck this concept and somehow make it “silly” because to me it sounds like the perfect Bay vehicle. As for the rest, if you don’t like the sound of it don’t fucking watch it. You're behaving like radical Muslims who have just witnessed the Quoran being jizzed on by a guy in a pig costume. They are popcorn movies, they don’t fucking matter, they are 90 minutes of enjoyable escapism. I still like them though.
Well if that's the case why bother making them aliens? I mean does that change somehow make the story and characters more compelling or interesting? Sure, someone who's 11 years old and didn't grow up with TMNT probably doesn't give a shit either way, but people like Parker are going to watch something like a TMNT movie because of childhood nostolgia. That means it actually is importat to keep to the core concepts of the source material, otherwise it just becomes a random sci-fi action flick.
Not a prequel to Alien, but a companion piece. You will notice one familiar set piece in the trailer (The giant HR Giger gun-thing) that link the two films. This film takes place in the same universe as Alien, but it's about the civilization they found in the original film. Oh, and Michael Fassbender plays the Bishop-style android. Awesome.
But it would be such an inconsequential plot point if everything else is good and would be the least of the movies worries considering the director. If they were making new Turtles with different names as well and tossing all of their old personalities then that would be a major change that would render the old ones meaningless. This coming from a long time fan, who also played countless hours of Turtles in Time, and wore a homemade Michelangelo costume for Halloween as a kid (seriously, if this wasn't your favorite character, you're a communist). " OH MY GODWSZZZZ! DID YOU HEAR?!?! APRIL ONEAL ISN'T GOING TO WEAR A YELLOW JUMPSUIT FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUXXXX THIS FILM!"* *I guess there is an April Oneil porn star.
As much as I enjoyed the cartoon and the first two live action films as a kid, the best thing to come out of the TMNT franchise was unquestionably "Turtles in Time". To this day, it's one of the 3-4 greatest side-scrolling beat em' ups ever. Anyways, what's amusing is that Adam Carolla had a bit on his podcast today about this fucking idiotic "controversy". Here are his exact words; (Responding to a letter from some voice actor called "Cousin Oliver" who refers to Bay's vehicle as "the rape of our childhood memories") "This is faggotry of the highest magnitude...we're insane. I've been saying this for millions of years now, these ASSWIPE adults, it's like these 42 year-old adults arguing over the fucking Silver Surfer, and Green Lantern...it's like, ADULT DUDES having serious conversations about (nerdy, retarded-sounding voice) 'how they've ruined the Fantastic Four, and the Hulk's been squandered, too.' It's like you're a FUCKING guy, you're a GUY who should be talking about fucking and drinking scotch, and cars and shit, and hitting sales bonuses, not talking about what they did to fucking Aquaman, you fucking retards! All these fucking asswipes and their fucking comic books!" I could not agree more nor have put it any more succinctly. I liked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was 6-10 years old. I once tried to watch the cartoon again as a 16 year-old and couldn't get through half an episode. Who the fuck cares what they do with it? It was mindless fluff for little kids before, and it will continue to be that.
I agree with this although with regard to your "3-4 greatest" claim, can you actually think of two better beat em' ups than TiT? I thought about this and the only one I thought of that could challenge TiT was the X-men arcade game. Probably belongs in the video game thread though.
This is coming out soon. The TV spots are popping up here and there but here is the full trailer. I'm a horror nerd so I'm excited about this, from the looks of it, it may put a spin on the usual partying teenagers get axed off in the woods storyline.
I forgot that I saw the theatrical trailer for this when I saw THG. Charlize Theron makes me want to see this movie. Plus it just looks really well done. Also for some odd fucking reason, I want to think Kristen Stewart can do more than whatever she does in Twlight which I've been told is horrible. I saw her in Adventureland and liked her.
