I normally ignore this guy's posts, but this is so outrageous I have a hard time passing up comment. Who is this supposed "friend", and do you really think it's logical that 40+ year old "Warner Brothers executives" would weep at a comic book film aimed at adolescents, even a good one?
I booked seats to the IMAX for it on Saturday. Ever since they put the 19+ age theatres up here I've ALWAYS been pre-booking theatre seats. I have not seen a show yet that comes even CLOSE to being as sold out as The Avengers is. I am NOT a Joss Whedon fan. I think Buffy The Vampire Slayer is the absolutely worst show of the 1990's and should have been cancelled after its pilot aired. It blows my mind why a show so impossibly stupid and ham-fisted could be a runaway hit. In fact, every show that has his name on it sucks (I haven't watched Firefly) but I trust this will be a fun time.
Sorry, FRIENDS takes the worst show award. Also, Harrison Ford is negotiating to star in the Blade Runner sequel. Which you know, is retarded since he's going to look considerably older and he's supposed to be a replicant. Hopefully they can explain it well and not retcon the first movie. If they get Vangelis for the soundtrack it might not be so bad.
I normally don't unhide this guy's posts, but this is inside information. My best friend of 15+ years Eric moved out to L.A. in October, to become a director, started doing some small production stuff (like hosting sneak peak previews for executives) on the Warner Bro's lot in January. He also had a short stint working at Thunder Road Pictures reviewing scripts to see if they get produced. He also made a short film called Carpe Millenium that starred Steve Yun, aka Glenn on the Walking Dead. I'm not going to toss bullshit out there to hype up a movie I'm not getting paid to promote. He also said the version they saw was pushing 3.5 hours. But I am excited for this movie, I've seen bad movies with good trailers and vice versa. I doubt Nolan is going to go out on some weak shit.
It will be. I was about to come to the defense of Firefly but about 6 months ago I tried t get my wife into it. I remember it being such a fantastic show. It probably was a few episodes in but on attempt to rewatch the first episode she was bored as shit and I have to agree with her. Whedon does seem to learn and get better though. Avengers is the best example I can give of that.
Yup, at least the premise is a little more in the Die Hard tradition than the bullshit that was Die Hard 4.0.
So, the SciFi channel has a trailer out for its new masterpiece. Piranhaconda Yeah, yeah, I know. This thread is serious business and we celebrate "films". Bite me. My sons and I are going to sit down and watch this piece of shit just like my dad and I used to watch Godzilla movies.
With that business out of the way, allow me to take things into 'artier' or at least more 'literary' territory (relative to this thread) with some somewhat sad news. I've never read Lovecraft (I do want to give it a go), but the sound of del Toro's passion for this project was great, especially with James Cameron behind it. With the insistence of a hard 'R' rating and unconventional protagonist (so I'm told), it was always dicey that it would get made, but I believe that had he stuck to his guns, GdT would have gotten it off the ground eventually. The apparent similarities to Prometheus however, has taken the wind out of his sails, it seems. Of course he already went and made Pacific Rim, due out next year, but it does feel a little like plan b. In fact, PR is apparently about humans fighting giant monsters wearing giant mecha, so that cheers me up. That and Prometheus retaining an 'R' rating. And now I'm off to watch me some classic Guillermo del Toro. Fun fact: 'Guillermo' is the Spanish version of 'William,' which I did not know till today.
H.P. Lovecraft is my favourite horror writer along with Clive Barker. Lovecraft died in his early forties and wrote mostly short stories or novellas, but many of them are bone-chilling and exceptionally atmospheric. Usually film translations of his stories are disgraceful (see: The Unnamable) but Stuart Gordon's first two films were both decent and exceptionally gross: Re-Animator (a knockout horror-comedy based on Herbert West: Re-Animator) and From Beyond which is even MORE fucked up. Anyone that likes horror MUST read H.P. Lovecraft, because it's a crime not to. I recommend The Tomb for starters.
Skyfall teaser is out. Fap fap fap fap. For an event movie they really have a prestigious crew. Multiple Oscar nominees and winners. Still, if there's a shaky cam in this I'm going to boil Sam Mendes' manhood. So far this and Batman are the only flicks I give a hoot about this year. Edit: Just looked up the crew. Oscar nom'd and Playwright Patrick Marber did work on the script. The guy that wrote "Closer," one of my favorite things ever. Holy shit. Albert F'n Finney is in this too. Huge nerd boner over here.
I'm hoping it has a little more of the fun of Casino Royale. I didn't think Quantum of Solace was really awful, but it certainly was a lot more dour. While I can't say I like the over-the-top Bond films, I still think they shouldn't be joyless.
