The line between Onion-style parody and modern movie trailer isn't just thin or blurry anymore, it's practically non-existent. If the goal was to create a buffoonish, shallow mockery of the book that showed how desperate, out of ideas, and worthless Hollywood has become, they succeeded marvelously. I'm just disappointed we didn't have a scene where someone "makes it rain" while bitches pop their booties. Then again, that would actually be funny and constitute entertainment.
Completely and utterly agreed. After all, it's Gatsby. In 3-D. You know, the way God and F. Scott Fitzgerald intended it to be. I can't imagine all that dough fallin' and bootie poppin' RIGHITINFRONTOFMYFACE!!! IT'SLIKEIT'SREAL!!! Truth be told, I'm actually kind of excited for this movie only because I kind of dug what Luhrmann did with Romeo and Juliet (and this coming from an English purist). Therefore, I'm curious to see what he does with this story. That said, it's a very very very thin tightrope that he's walking. It's either going to be insanely creative and cool or will absolutely ruin a timeless classic. Sadly, I think it's going to be the latter but I think I'll enjoy watching it in a freakish way and getting pissed off the same way that I watch The Bachelor and horseshit like that.
ET Online has a 'preview for the trailer' of Django Unchained, which I guess barely counts as news, but is the first clips of the film I've seen. Just from the way it's shot, it looks a little sillier than I imagined while reading the script, at least going by all the crash zooms and really wide angle lenses, which I guess is Tarantino aping the cheesier spaghetti westerns. Of course who can say what it'll turn out like, I remember being so unsure after reading Inglourious Basterds and thinking that it'd cause a huge controversy, which didn't really end up being the case. But still, with this subject matter, and an apparent walk out by several cast and crew, including Kurt Russell means that it's all up in the air at this point. I still look forward to this film, being a fan of Tarantino's I sure hope he can pull this off, because his script really went into some distasteful areas; that of course being the point.
There are a few more production stills here. I like that it might take a more lighthearted approach; that's exactly what a throwback exploitation movie like this needs. It's also a good sign that all the characters are wearing beards. I haven't read the script beforehand like I did for Basterds. Is it still riddled with 3rd grade level misspellings? Interesting. Where did you read this, and what were the circumstances?
Another book turned into a movie. I have never read this one, so I have no idea about the odds of it being fucked up like The Great Gatsby.
Dango Unchained trailer. I can't help but be excited. It was beyond that, but then again, they all are. I will say this, I laughed out loud reading certain scenes, I didn't have that reaction reading Basterds It uses the most un-pc, profane language to describe world of slavery in a very disconcerting way, but really that just sets up the hostile world which Django has to navigate. I don't know how controversial this will prove, but there a couple times I had to remind myself that the hero is a (freed) slave who will no doubt triumph at the end (all westerns have happy endings, right? Right?). I'm given to understanding that Tarantino does his research, and he'd talked about doing a 'Southern' for years now, so hopefully it is somewhat authentic. The rockin' b-spaghetti western vibe (more Hellman than Leone) wasn't so apparent in the script, but that could also be down to the trailer. IB was made to look like a Brad Pitt action extravaganza. Seems I've been misled as it turns out, I had heard of a dramatic walkhout because the film "wasn't western enough" which is just bizarre and the source of that rumour is IMDB, so I think it's safe to not pay attention to it. Someone on Roger Avary's messageboard had this to say a few weeks back: I can see how QT's personality would rub a lot of people the wrong way, but to me he sounds really amusing to be around. Sucks about Leo, but at least he kind of looks his age in this, even in Shutter Island he seemed too boyish to be a grizzled WWII vet/US Marshal.
Jesus, Chris Waltz usually sounds like he has syrup in his mouth and he has an uncanny accent in that preview. Naturally, QT is a polarizing director amongst movie fans (I admire him) and I really want to see this film now. I love how Tarantino has fun with his casting choices with every film, and watching his movies feels like channel-surfing at times.
Denzel, Don Cheadle, I'm in. Realistic premise. What would happen if Mr. Hudson had a drink the day of the flight?
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I always thought that the low budget campiness of the original movies were part of the charm. Is Ash going to be in it because he isn't casted yet, but then again how do you replace Bruce Campbell? It COULD be great but wasn't Evil Dead II already a remake of this? I... just don't know. The Evil Dead (2013) Horror | Thriller - 12 April 2013 (USA) Not yet released (voting begins after release) Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, heads to a remote cabin with her brother and a group of friends, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads to danger and horror. Director: Fede Alvarez Writers: Sam Raimi (screenplay), Fede Alvarez, and 2 more credits ยป Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Jessica Lucas | See full cast and crew
Wait, what are you unsure about? You only listed a bunch of reasons why the remake is a desperate cash grab, will have none of the low budget charm of the original, and will most likely suck. What are the reasons you think it might be "great"?
One: You can't remake Evil Dead and expect it to be good. On its own it was a mash-up of films like Suspiria, House On Haunted Hill, Night of the Living Dead, etc. to name a few. It invented its own style and unless the remake can do that as well than it will be just another instantly forgettable remake. Two: Evil Dead II was a remake for about the first six minutes and then becomes a class by of film all by itself, blending comedy and horror like no movie ever has. It's a better movie than the first (but far less gruelling and horrifying). I also liked Army of Darkness. Thought I would say that. Whether they play this remake straight-up like the first or go-for broke gory slapstick, either way I think the cardiac line has gone flat and the patient has died on the table.
I don't really expect it to be anything but an abortion of a film, to be honest. It's just that the optimist in me desperately wants this movie to do the original trilogy justice, though I think we all know that there is little chance it will.
I never saw the "charm" in the campiness of the first two or anything really that made them cult favorites. They just weren't my cup of tea. Armies of Darkness on the other hand is a comedy classic.
Now that's exciting. The only bad part of this is that I'm more excited for the kids movies nowadays than anything else.
Hopefully this movie gains momentum and gets released nationwide: Matthew Lillard directed this, and it looks like he knocked it out of the park. If the rest of the movie is anything like the trailer, it looks to be very promising.
I don't know whether it was intentional or not, but I can think of at least several world-class metal drummers who are every bit as fat, goofy, and weird as the protagonist of that film. It's like every drummer stereotype come to life, which is awesome. Focus- It's a shame they couldn't secure a theatrical distribution deal for this. The trailer is among the better ones I have seen, and it has garnered good reviews from a variety of sources; Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a human being, but he's an excellent actor and talented writer and director.
Yeah, that looks fucking awesome. It looks like the old school Gibson charisma that he's kept absent for so long. I would no doubt lobby to give that movie a full release, and the trailer is indeed a lot of fun. I have good news, the film Berendal is in pre-production. It's the official sequel to The Raid: Redemption, which is the best action movie made in at least the last decade. If you haven't seen it, what the fuck is your excuse?
