The one hospital on Maui is responsible for three islands. They’re gigafucked. And I understand the attitude, but either you lock down or you don’t. I love every bit of the extra fines, mask mandates, etc. And they’re for sure between a (lava) rock and a hard place as tourism keeps everything afloat and them having jobs, and if you lock down that then you essentially shut down the economy. But it’s like, either you want it or you don’t.
Oahu has a huge military presence. They make money off of that alone. But, their history and our military presence plays into the locals' negative sentiments for haolies. Locals will play nice with tourists because of the money involved, but covid has definitely lowered the mask (heh) for many on their true attitude.
I suspect that the worst types of tourists are also making up a much larger chunk of the people vacationing right now than they normally would. People in the service industry aren't only being affected by the lockdowns and restrictions. They're also facing a larger amount of bullshit per capita because reasonable, empathetic people aren't going out as much, and unreasonable assholes are going out even more out of spite.
people watching yesterday was incredible. It looked like worst of Appalachian mountains invaded paradise. It has taken me less than a day to learn that asking “how are you doing?” before anything else immediately endears you to them. Valet head dude was laid off for a year and a half, lost a bunch of good friends, him and I were sharing Covid horror stories. fuck man this place got decimated
Anyone eyeing any Black Friday deals? I haven't bought anything on BF in about 5 years since I got burned buying a TV at Best Buy.
I bought some small stuff from Cabela's that was deeply discounted. I find anything major is shit quality purposely designed to be a piece of crap to entice people to buy at deep discount. I did buy a new automatic coffee machine from Miele that was 20% off, but not sure if that was specifically a BF deal or not. More than anything I picked up some stuff that was on inventory clearance. Things like planting supplies for the garden next year, etc. i also took advantage of an early sale on rock salt for the driveway. The local Home Despot had 20kg bags on for $5, so I got 6. (We had a run on it a couple years ago and it was upwards of $50 a bag then, so I have no problem buying cheap and storing... it's not like it's going to go bad). Oh, and best use of "curbside pickup ever"... let the poor HD schlub load the 6 bags into the car in the rain... didn't even have to go into the store.
I picked up a Mesh Wi-Fi system from Best Buy, I wanted two Alien routers but that shit just wasn’t in the budget. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/linksys-atlas-pro-ax5300-wifi-6-system-3-pack/6474691.p?skuId=6474691 Should have done it a long time ago, I only have 2 of the nodes set up right now and the difference in coverage and speed is night and day.
Jesus, that sounds like one hell of a Black Friday riot. Did someone bring a flamethrower or something?
Naa there was a pretty newscaster on one of the displays, so I rubbed my penis on it to try to feel the warmth of a woman. Turns out Black Friday plasma TVs aren’t the highest quality and tend to overheat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
a bunch of non alcoholic beer and liquors that had deep discounts. As a rule I only buy things that I’m gonna buy anyway, just earlier with sales. The sunglass hut always runs a BOGO offer here in Maui so my wife and I jump on that. Plus warranties are good so when we jump on it and it breaks they replace it for free
Man I am whipped. Thurs is going to be an incredible eating day though. I got the filling of the dressing made, the white wine and apples for the baked brie (changed from pears), roasted a batch of garlic, roasted some butternut squash, and chopped the veggies for the turkey. Oh yeah. I opened that white wine for the apples today. Brb....
I've been in SC for almost a week now, and I've only gained 10 lbs. We cleaned out my late grandmother's place, and good GOD old ladies didn't throw anything away, ever. Any advice on how to sell old records, china and old furniture? Everything else we trashed/sent to Goodwill, but my mom is adamant this stuff is worth money. The wildest part: we found Elvis 8-track tapes. In 2021. No 8 track player, of course. All the home videos, dvd's, etc. we sent this woman over the years, nowhere to be found. She kept at least 10 8 track casettes for reasons known but to God. Gearing up for turkey day, and I feel for my mom something fierce over the years. For 6 of us, I'll probably spend $400 on food. That is wild to me, especially considering how turkey most other times of year is a really cheap, really high volume protein.
@downndirty 8 tracks really aren't worth much, but you could try eBay. China isn't worth much either. It's kind of out of style. Your best bet is to find a younger family member who will take it, otherwise I'd donate it. (Double check it isn't antique bone china) The furniture, it really depends on what she has. If it's super nice a consignment shop might be the ticket, but Facebook marketplace is really the way to go. What all did y'all buy for Thanksgiving dinner?
Don't do an estate sale. What a fucking scam. They determine the prices and whatever doesn't get sold, they *donate* to some church. My grandparents had three Louis XIV style pieces and they should've sold for $5-10k each. They didn't sell so we got dick. A 3700 sqft house with a four car garage that was STUFFED with nice stuff netted us ~$8k
Could also look into estate sale companies if you want to outsource it. They'll do the heavy lifting on everything and take a cut of the profits and haul off whatever doesn't sell.
Sorry for the double post, but this came up while I was typing. You obviously remove the expensive things before you let them get their eyes on things.
Makes sense, but we live 3000 miles away and were only there for a week to handle all the final affairs. We priced out shipping the Louie items but it didn't financially make sense and the style didn't fit into our house. At all.
