Just when I thought I might be able to go outside and get some stuff done, Helene said “The hell you are” and we got that same sprinkling rain. We needed rain, but not for an entire goddamned week.
I've been gone on vacation for almost a month, so the lawn needs to be cut... I'm getting judged by my neighbours, I'm sure. It rained on the day we got back, and been overcast but not raining since... today was the first few sprinkles that kind of left the ground damp. No National Guard response required.
There's another one that might form, and if it does, it's headed straight for Texas with basically nothing to steer it away or speed it up. Helene Part II basically. Looking at closer to the end of next week when we'll know for sure. Might not form, but IF it does, it's gonna be massive.
I was in the middle of creating a post yesterday with the theme of "sick day" but the fact that it never got posted is just... Perfect. Y'all be safe with the hurricane activity. I recovered from yesterday's mystery illness and am sitting under a canopy at another festival selling soap. The weather is beautiful, come stop and chat. Taco plate is history. I feel totally content.
My parents are leaving for Florida in a few days to check on their house. I'd been checking in with the fishing guide I use and have become friends with, and he's offered to shuttle them to their house on his boat. Because the only way to get there currently is via boat. Holy shit.
New drinking game idea for when your power goes out: Take a shot every time you hit a light switch for no damn reason.
Some the videos on Facebook are insane. I tried to find it YouTube so I could embed it here, but it ain't there.
yeah the level of devastation is just insanity. I would not want to be working for FEMA right now... Asheville, NC is currently only accessible by air. All the roads are closed. This is what it looks like. My biological father's mother lives there. She's elderly so I'm not sure if she's still alive. If she had a medical emergency during this time, obviously that would be the end of it. But he's an abusive prick and she's a cunt, so I only care so much.
I saw a post of a family begging for a helicopter ride out of an Airbnb. They took a vacation in the path of one of the most destructive storms of our lifetime. They have no power, no water, a couple days worth of food. And the road out is impassable.
That lake is going to flood my families lake house on Wateree. Typical NC. Shut those flood gates or don’t open them full stop at least. Y’all did the same shit in 2015. God I hate that state.
A day before it hit I text a former coach who now lives in Charleston to make sure he's good to go. He said he wasn't aware they were gonna be impacted and had planned to fly to Miami for vacation the day of the storm.
Our lake was built for flood control. It can rise 20 feet above normal pool elevation before it goes over the emergency spillways. There are no finished floor elevations below that spillway height. There will be some water in some crawl spaces and several roads will be closed due to flooding and some people should make sure there vehicles get moved to higher ground. But not all out devastation. Closest I've seen it was 17 feet above normal pool in 2020. I'm interested to see how high it gets this time, but not too worried about it.
Yeah, Ashville got destroyed. They are dropping supplies by air. Historic Biltmore Village is largely underwater.
