I feel the same way about Wednesday. Aimed at the goth nerd nightmare before Christmas addicts. It aight but low on the bingability scale. Meh television.
Just watched a couple episodes of Netflix’s Treason. Not at all engaging. My mom loved it and thought it was fantastic, but it was such bullshit I just couldn’t invest in it.
I’m finding it harder and harder to find genuinely entertaining shows to watch. Absolutely NOTHING on cable piques my interest at all, and so much of the streaming stuff is crap. It’s like I’m just waiting for the intermittent good show to pop up every now and then… like Reacher, or Jack Ryan.
I did find Andor to be quite entertaining… very well written, more story than action. I’m hoping the Star Wars stuff coming out takes on that kind of mature storytelling as opposed to a quick titillating run of action.
I’ve retreated into watching the This Old House channel on Pluto TV. Media in general just hadn’t been that good lately. Jack Ryan isn’t perfect, but it’s compelling and enjoyable, especially since I’m a big fan of the Clancy books. Otherwise, there’s just nothing fun to watch. It’s either retread of stuff already covered by far better shows/movies or angsty bullshit with some silly message. I’m pushing 40; I don’t need the media I consume to teach me a lesson. I just watch to crack a beer and turn my brain off for an hour or two.
Most of these have probably been seen, but make sure you get through them before you abandon narrative TV all together: Breaking Bad The Wire Game of Thrones Arrested Development Bojack Horseman Seinfeld The Simpsons The Sopranos Black Mirror Louie Band of Brothers Barry Brockmire Chernobyl Dark Deadwood The Deuce The Expanse Futurama Halt and Catch Fire House of Cards The Knick Love Death and Robots Mad Men Maniac Master of None The Morning Show Narcos Scrubs Sherlock Silicon Valley Six Feet Under Stranger Things Succession True Detective Veep We Own This City When They See Us The Terror 30 Rock Atlanta Avatar: The Last Airbender Better Call Saul The Boys Community The Crown Easy Fleabag For All Mankind Freaks and Geeks Girls The Handmaid's Tale It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Mindhunter Parks and Recreation Rick and Morty Rome Severance Star Trek: The Next Generation Unbelievable Watchmen Weeds The West Wing Westworld The Americans Archer Battlestar Galactica The Bear Big Little Lies Brooklyn Nine-Nine The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Dead Like Me Dead To Me Derry Girls Dexter Firefly Fresh Meat Generation Kill GLOW The Good Place His Dark Materials John Adams The Legend of Korra LOST The Man in the High Castle The Mandalorian Manhunt Mr Robot Mrs. Fletcher The Night Of The Office Only Murders in the Building Ozark The Pacific Party Down Pushing Daisies The Sandman Schitt's Creek Shameless Squid Game A Teacher The Umbrella Academy Unorthodox The Walking Dead A Young Doctor's Notebook
It’s really fucking bad. Bad writing, bad acting. Implausible story line. The characters are retarded. I can suspend disbelief for a lot of shows so long as it’s not fucking stupid.
I've defended it before and I'll defend it again. If you view it as a satire, like a more subtle version of Seinfeld or Always Sunny, it's fucking brilliant. Also there's a scene where Allison Williams gets her ass eaten out, so hey, something for the whole family.
Meh, I thought it was going to be the video of guys with M16s(?) laying rounds into some pirates. I quite enjoyed Wednesday. Watched it in two 4 episode blocks.
What if I view it as a satire of a good TV show, does that count? I just can’t get on board with episode after episode of privileged white women complaining about how hard their lives are when they themselves needlessly create every problem they have. I can just call up some of my wife’s friends for that experience.
The Peripheral has been pretty good so far, at least in my opinion. If any of you play D&D, have you see the horse shit that Wizards of the Coast is trying to pull? For context:
That's a mostly good list, but leaving Justified off of it is criminal. And, there is a new Justified series coming this year.
If you've ever read any Elmore Leonard, or enjoyed Out Of Sight, you need to get on that. Also, if you like Deadwood, there are lots of actors that appear in both.
There's not much TV I watch anymore, and I've found many shows I initially like, tend to fizzle out for me like Goliath or Cobra Kia. Lately, I've been mostly watching YouTube channels. My grandfather served on the Battleship New Jersey so when I found the museum has a channel I checked it out. Watching their videos led me to Drachinifel. Another great naval history channel. He focused a lot on the technological and engineering developments of naval warfare up to 1950.
Is his writing good? I’ve been going back and forth on whether to read the books that Justifed was based on.
The tone of his writing is what sets up the shows and movies, so think so. I've only read 3:10 To Yum and Killshot, though, so I'm no the best authority on that. (My aunt loves his books, and will watch anything that gets adapted, fwiw, lol)
Justified is one of my favorite shows of the last decade. The characters are perfect and the episodes are really engaging. Dialogue is awesome too. Seriously, just go watch it you haven’t already. I also recommend ‘The Bear’, but it is on Hulu. Netflix has been recommending a lot of historical fiction show lately. I’ve been watching ‘Viking Valhalla’ which is a solid show too. Right now is a bit of a dead period for tv, but the winter always has been.
His writing’s fantastic in my opinion. Especially his westerns, but his modern crime books are good too.
