It is Crab Feed Season and I am headed to my first of the year tonight. This one is a Stag party so plenty of Cigars, bragging and cussing along with the Crab.

All the churchs, nonprofits, service clubs all have crab feed fundraisers in February and March. You pay too much for dishes of crab, shrimp, and various side dishes. Then you bid of shit you do not need. It is a way to get out and socialize and see people that you usually do not see. I think it is sort of unique to the Central Valley of California, but who really knows.

    Ahh... gotcha.

My initial thinking was "it's rotting cod season?"

Masons around here have a fundraising Fish Fry. Same deal it sounds like.

Everywhere has their own fundraisers that are popular in that area. I would love to try a fish fry sometime.

We tend to have a bunch of pickerel around here, and perch... super tasty. There's a team that specializes in kitchen trailers that are huge mobile deep friers that will deep fry a shit ton of fish while you wait in line. Kind of like a mini food truck.

    It's pretty amazing.

Get up from your table inside the event, go to the parking lot, wait in line, get a bunch of freshly deep fried fish, go back inside. Repeat as necessary.

We don’t have enough of these sorts of things. I guess the local equivalent would be pig roasts or pancake breakfasts.

Yeah, we have a ton of bbq trailers around here that will put a side of beef on the spit. Same with pigs.

It’s great to be surrounded by farmland.

You can generally get a fish fry about anywhere around here year round. But when Lent starts, they really pick up.

Our Hibernians club does them on Fridays during Lent so I generally know what I’m having for dinner that night.

My wife's grandfather had a huge custom fryer built to do all the VFW fish fry. It took two people, one on each end, to lift the basket full of fish out of the oil and dump it onto the serving table. He wanted me to have it, and you would think it would be something I would want, as much as I love seafood. Except, I don’t like enough people to ever have need of something as big as this fryer. So, it went somewhere else. It would have just sat here, in the way, or rusting under the shelter if I didn't keep it in the shop.

Up our way, the Boy Scouts have a fantastic crab feed but I've been to a few shitty ones. Cold crab, no utensils, no butter warmers etc.

Pretty much the way this Crab Feed is tonight. Local Lions club, cold crab and shrimp, Salad and Garlic Bread on paper plates and plastic cuttlery. The beer and drinks are cheap and a chance to make bets on the Super Bowl. The Local College has a much fancier one in about a month to help with Athletics. Just a note that the female athletes look a whole lot different serving that night than when they are competing. I mean that in a good way.

My wife got me tickets to see Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes in Ithaca NY tonight. I’m a big fan, and thoroughly laughed my ass off for two hours. Man, I needed that.

    IMG_8147.jpeg

The show made of for the shitty dinner we had on the way. We stopped at a Texas Roadhouse and almost immediately I was on edge. Why are these places so fucking loud?

Then my napkin was dirty, they brought me the wrong beer, and forgot my fries. Okay, that’s all minor stuff, but then the music got turned up. A minute later the manager came by to do that thing where they make it seem like they give a shit about you. My wife mentioned the volume being turned up, but I didn’t hear much of the response.

    “What did she say?”
“She said they are going to dance then she’ll turn it down.”
    “They’re gonna what??”
    “Dance.”
“Well I better see some tits.”

I did not see any tits. Or a point to the waitstaff lining up and doing some half-assed line dance routine. We finished and got the hell out of there.

I also assumed it's so loud to drown out the screaming kids.

A Texas Road House opened about a year ago. I have yet to have a meal in there and not for a lack of trying. I open the restaurant door, it is loud and a long wait time. So I leave. Repeat a half dozen times over the last year.

We have a Chuck’s Road House mini chain around here. It’s not too bad, but I tolerate it because they have killer prime rib on for cheap.

When I’m in the mood for a big slab of PR, i’ll gladly tolerate the hustle and bustle of the place.

@Misanthropic is still partying in the neighbor's garage?

Just smoked some of the best wings i’ve ever had.

Made some cheesy mashed potatoes to go with them.

    Tonight is a great night.
