I got that weird email about Tucker's blog about hallucinogens as well, and I can't think of a reason he would have my email address except for the RMMB user list. Kind of unsettling to know that he might still be using that data a decade later. I remember reading Sloppy Seconds and being pretty sure that I recognized some of the stories as having been posts from the RMMB, but it was shut down and there was no good way to check.
I think one of the worse side effects of him hitting control + alt + delete on his site was all the affiliated writers whose content was lost. I enjoyed some of them a lot, including that special ed teacher... Rita?... who wrote The Tard Blog. It was super eye opening and an addicting mix of humor and heartbreak.
I agree. I really miss losing the content of the writers from the boobie thread. Some of those caption contest threads made me cry-laugh.
I basically summed up pretty quick that most of the stories in his later books are ones that weren’t good enough to make it into the first book.
Ironic that he now tries to make a career out of helping struggling writers when he would openly shit all over the ones that gave his site free content.
I don't think that his new company really does that so much as it ghostwrites nonfiction books for people who probably don't have very good ideas for books.
That is actually how i found about tucker max. Someone told me to read the tardblog and i found tucker max from there, think back in 02 or 03.
Fascinating. That's the first I've heard of someone working "backwards" to the rmmb. I googled and found some copies of the blog online on a few sites. The Tard Blog is/was super irreverent. You really have to read it all from the start, or at least whole lot of the entries, to get a feel for it. If you read a single entry the writer comes across as an unkind, sort of evil human. But she isn't. Everyone deals with trauma differently and it has to hurt her soul to see these disadvantaged kids with dysfunctional, rotten families who either make the problems worse or created the problem to start. I bet she has a killer poker face. What a blast from the past. I'm reading some of it again now and this one had me snorting. From a guest contributor.
I enjoyed the tardblog as well, but I couldn't help thinking that if I had a mentally disabled kid and I found out their teacher was writing lolz tards stories about them for strangers to laugh at I would fucking lose it.
I get that. On the other hand it is evident that she cares a lot about these kids. She picks them up from their home so they can participate in basketball when their dad is in jail... stuff like that. And I'm sure the names have been changed to protect the identities. We like to pretend that teachers are these robot saints but they are people too. I subbed grade school kids a bit when I first moved. They were regular abled kids, but the ludacris situations that arose on the daily because kids are fucking stupid was shocking. Sometimes you laugh to keep from crying.
Yeah, I don't think she was a callous, nasty person, or anything like that, but it's still a shitty thing to do, especially considering the target audience she was writing for.
I wonder about the start of the relationship some of these bloggers had with rmmb. Did they already have a blog and the affiliation gave them free hosting or more eyeballs? I dont neccesarily think that having a blog hosted on there dictates who you want your audience to be. There were other blogs that were really well written and thought provoking. Was it her idea to refer to them as "tards" or did TM have a hand in that... a gimmicky eye catcher to draw numbers? I think the use of that word is what puts people over the edge. If she used any other word to describe her students, I think the negative reaction would be a sliver of what it is. I agree that the word is distasteful and carries a ton of negative connotation. It is not a choice I would have made.
For me, it's not that. It would be the idea of someone using my kid's disability for people's amusement. I don't have kids, but I'm just saying if I was in that situation and found out about something like that I would be livid.
Nett was far too kind with his post but, as I told him in rep, I had forgotten about that time here. Chater had bailed and Supertramp (the most fucking annoying member EVER) was, well, being just that. If it had not been for Nett this place would have burned down shortly there after. He kinda swooped in and saved the day. His leadership is different in that he is very level headed but also when he swings the hammer, it's a done deal, fuck you. I think between the TMMB, RMMB and TiB I have about 20 years, maybe a little more. That is a lot of life. WB to the old members that are popping up. I think that's the best part of the anniversary. I am probably in the minority but, I miss the edge of the former/s. We are a well run machine but tend to lean to the PC side of things.
I’m with you, to a certain extent. I miss people being held harshly accountable, but it kind of went soft because we’d lose a lot more people than we have, I think. It rears up in me every now and then, like the “flying through hurricanes” thing, but then we lost 2 people as a result... one annoying dude and a phenomenal gunsmith/woodworker. We lost on that exchange.
I miss some of the older posters. Kato and his woodworking skills and just general all around good guy, Charles Johnson (hands down the funniest guy on here), the dude that use to bang his step sister, he was funny. SUAPYG, Currer Bell, dewerc's hunting and fishing posts, and a bunch others I can't recall right now. Although I can see their side of why they left, I do miss having some black people here to give their opinions on the political threads. Except for Nom. I use to think he was adding intelligence and valid points but towards the end, it was no longer a discussion between adults, it was one guy not adding to the conversation, just trying to ask things worded a certain way to make the other person feel stupid IMO. Like how in a movie, the slick hotshot comes in to make the hillbilly look stupid because he wants to impress the girl. If they redid Good Will Hunting, Nom would be cast as the dude in the bar making fun of Ben Affleck's character.
But if I remember correctly, that wasn't intentionally people trying to make him leave, right? It was just a matter of he thought he knew about something, then he ran into a buzzsaw of experts on the topic. Happens to me all the time: I have an opinion, someone with more knowledge/a better perspective chimes in, then that opinion changes based upon the new information. It's called the learning process. That the dude threw a fit about being shown that he was wrong wasn't necessarily something that was to be expected or controlled. People react differently to learning that they're wrong, sure, but I don't think we should necessarily avoid telling people they're wrong about something just to save face. That's how we all learn and grow. Also: I miss ShrinkTalk. One of those RMMB blogs, the dude ran it on his own for a while and then it just died out. Tyler Knight (the porn star) had a blog there toward the end which was incredibly interesting as well. Then he "got woke" or whatever you kids call it nowadays, quit porn and started writing weird half-fiction on his blog before stopping completely as well.
Jesus H. Christ I'm feeling old now. A full decade, huh? Even though I didn't post much, I met some damn decent folks here. I went off kinda like Nett mentioned. Just didn't log in one day, and then got busy with a new job, life, and all that fun stuff. Pretty col to see folks coming out of the woodwork. Without Nett's email I probably would have kept going on my merry way. Seeing Shegirl still posting makes me realize just how damn much I miss chatting with her! How YOU doin'?
