I'm actually tempted to bring a punch card as a joke. Though that might also be tempting fate. I've surprisingly had a very injury-free training block. Running has a 100% injury rate, with an average of 50% of runners experiencing an injury each year which prevents them from running for a period of time. Over my 4 month marathon training block, and the two months leading up to it, I only had two small injuries (knee issue early on, then the ankle sprain during a trail race) but neither prevented me from missing any time. Of course, all of this means nothing on Sunday when I stress my body more than it ever has before.
Agreed. I use mayo for basically one thing in life, and that is the smallest amount possible to make the tuna stick together. I kept seeing that the best thing you could do to a grilled cheese sandwich was to use mayo on the outside instead of butter. Nope, still shit. (note: the best thing you can do to a grilled cheese sandwich is to use shredded cheese on the outside)
I think I've told this here before? The first marathon I ran, at every other water station they had packs of "Gu" which is an energy gel, sort of like concentrated Gatorade in a fast food ketchup pack. Now they make Sport Beans by Jelly Belly that are energy jelly beans, too. Both are good to prevent cramps on long runs. (It's hard for the body to make good use of just water at that distance - you need the sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, too.) They also used to make it in bulk containers, like a peanut butter jar. But, it wasn't Gu, it was probably like "Bob's Bulk Energy Gel" or something. At one stop, this dude in front of me reached out and grabbed what he thought was a bulk hunk of this, placed on a tongue depressor for easy grab-while-running. He put it in his mouth and immediately licked it all off. It was Vaseline.
I've never heard that before but that is hilarious. Would also totally wreck my race. I'm not sure how you could get that out of your mouth? I have enough issue eating while I'm running, so I just stop for a second and walk. I use maurten gels, which are a bit more expensive, but have the consistency of jello, are 100 calories each, and get into your system quicker. Used to use gu until it gave my stomach the goos. Also take saltstick caps, which are basically a pill filled with all the electrolytes you need. Wish those were a thing during my drinking days. Have you heard that heinz ketchup is actually trying to make their taking their packets as running fuel a "thing"?
I just realized after you posted this, people make mayo with a whole egg and vinegar like a fucking hobo.
I found clif blox energy chews work the best for me on century rides. The gels get messy and with some, the individual packets can be tough to open one handed on the bike. These are still supplementary, on long bike rides I have to eat something substantial during the ride or my energy will still crash.
