That is the WORST. Crushed, ripped open and buried, then the rancid trash thaws and rots in the sun days down the road. Makes everything look like Windsor. At least the green boxes have (finally) alleviated some of that.
Yeah, I’m really happy with the green bin recycling. It’s somehow magically reduced the rest of my garbage by an unreasonable amount. At first I thought having “real” garbage pickup every 2 weeks was going to be a problem. Turns out that’s not the case at all. I’m barely using one garbage can every 2 weeks. I don’t know how that works.
Curious what people have for waste bins. In northern California, we have a regular trash bin, a recycling bin and a green waste bin which is also supposed to get food scrapes.
We have regular old garbage cans, pick up is once a week, and they’ll take just about anything that’s not recyclable or appliances. One time I cut a sleeper sofa in half with a circular saw, and they took it. Recycled stuff is in a separate bin, comingled and also is picked up once a week. We have a day for lawn clippings, leaves, branches etc, but my lot is large enough, and borders some woods, so I don’t need to worry about it. They’ll take any appliance if you call ahead to let them know. There’s also a recycling center in town that takes electronics, metal, etc.
We've also got a company called The Metal Guy that will drop by and pick up any metal stuff you want to get rid of... from scrap to old lawnmowers to whatever else you have, for free. It's a handy service, and I tend to throw them a bone every now and then. I've given them old pressure washers I couldn't be bothered to try and resell, an old front hitch for my Jeep that I haven't had in years, old metal jerry cans I never use, and on and on... they drop by and pick that shit up. It's handy as hell.
Here in the nearby city they have trucks that pick up recycling and then another for garbage. It’s different in many other parts of the county, including here where we live. Oh we have recycling bins too, but ours is all picked up by private companies and it’s all thrown into the same truck. So yeah, we sort out garbage and recycling for absolutely no discernible reason. And have been for decades.
We live way out and don't have garbage trucks that will come to your home. Every now and then, someone with a pickup truck will try to start a small service, transporting bagged trash to the county dumpster sites for a monthly fee, but they usually don't last long. So, we have to take our own trash to the county dumpsters. They recently built all new dumpster sites with fences and started employing people to guard the dumpsters. This has been a major improvement because when the dumpsters were not watched, people made gigantic messes and leave furniture and big stuff just sitting on the ground. Our site is right at the end of our dirt road, I send our kid with the lawn tractor and trailer to take our bags up there. They also added all the recycling containers to the new sites. Before, if we wanted to recycle, we had to drive about 40 minutes to the main garbage site.
A neighboring town has one of those and I wish ours would do the same. But they'd fuck up a wet dream so we're stuck in the 1950's still.
I think my garbage folks will pick up about anything. Herby Curby picked up once a week, recycling every other week and anything put on the curb will be picked up once a week. Anything short of paint, oil, gas etc. I've dropped a sleeper sofa out there and watched them yank it up into the truck.
Yeesh, in my county, they'll charge you a $20 "overfill charge" if your lid isn't able to close all the way. And commercial refuse is even worse. My old tenant threw some recycling away in a black plastic bag but you're supposed to use clear plastic bags. No warning, just got an email with a pic* of the offending bag and a notice that there would be a $414 charge on the bill. *Every trash truck has 11 cameras to track what is thrown away.
Our trash is picked up on Tuesdays & Fridays. Recycling is also on Tuesdays, however our recycling is limited to aluminum, #1 & 2 plastics and paper/cardboard. We have a few glass drop off locations, and we do that. Annoyingly the glass dumpsters have small potholes so you can only drop one container at a time through. Electronics, appliances, construction debris, yard waste, etc., I can take to our local dump. A bit different than as a kid where we burned all paper/cardboard, etc in a burn barrel and my dad used old motor oil as a weed killer.
I am confused, it says yard waste, then it says we don't accept yard clippings. So what is yard waste then? edit: i read what it says, but to me yard waste is grass clippings
