This is literally that ships track before heading into the canal: (still image taken from the video clip) Tell me that's not a dick with some pubes on it. It's like Beevus and Butthead took over the bridge and said, "watch this".
also, you just know all the people on all those anchored ships are having some dirty, dirty pirate sex. There's gonna be global baby boom in about 9 months and they re-name it the Susex Canal. Unless it's all men, in which case I refer to Dixie on what happens then
I don't know what the chances are for a ship managing to run aground at an angle nearly perpendicular to the channel and completely blocking it, but I bet they're pretty low. I'm still not really clear on how it managed to happen. I don't know what contingency plans they could have made short of having heavy equipment readily available.
I'm with you. They are claiming 40 knot winds and sandstorms... and I could see how current would take over at a certain point of deflection (when the whole thing becomes a broadside sail), but yeah... the incident report, if it ever becomes public, should be quite interesting. Especially given the financial consequences of this action.

So if this happens in a US controlled waterway, the first move is to unload everything you can to lighten it, and then dredge in the direction you'll tug and then let the engineers go apeshit. We have some Navy resources that can be brought to bear on shit like this, in addition to some really cool floating engineering marvels. The issue is going to be this thing coming apart or sinking, as long as it's floating and can sail, it's a solvable problem (theoretically). If it comes apart or sinks, it may be technically easier, but longer to remove and clean up. This is an incredible fuck up, and its wild to witness, and I am thanking Big Baby Jesus it's not something we have to deal with at work.
Thanks, Nett. I've been clicking on all those little boats for the last hour. The little pink ones are yachts and have some pretty amazing pictures!
Problem is how the hell are you going to off load the containers? There is nothing on the ship that can do it and the banks are all sand so there is no way they are going to get anything on the banks to do it.
