FYI, if you put a little bubbler/aerator in the water, like from a fish tank, it'll create enough motion on the surface so that it won't freeze. We do that in some high level winter fishing lakes to keep the fish alive. Probably too late now, but be careful of damage caused by ice expansion... it's a real thing.
Our pump has a sensor that effectively does the same thing. Or it did. Til the power went off and it was a real feel of -16 outside. as it was freezing we broke up the ice as best we could periodically. But overnights since Monday morning it’s re-frozen after breaking it up.
Ouch... hopefully your pump and other plumbing got drained out in time and hasn't had some serious damage occur.
That’s a negatory. So I’m hoping for the best but there’s not a damn thing we can do til we find out how it looks.
Them: When California has blackouts, it's California's fault! When Texas has blackouts, it's California's fault! Reality: When California has blackouts, its because of a Texas entity. When Texas has blackouts, it's because of a Texas entity.
Hoping the best for you... I can only imagine the look on some insurance agents faces as they learn all about frozen pipes for the first time.
we are now the only house in my immediate family, both sides, that does not currently have at least some level of damage (mostly flood) from frozen pipes. I tried to give everyone a heads up on how to deal with this shit, but apparently because I'm not an "engineer" I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. Look who's laughing now.
I honestly don’t know what all will be covered and won’t. It’s shitty that this didn’t happen due to our negligence, but due to the negligence of two entities we have zero choice in dealing with. ERCOT handles EVERYTHING here except in the panhandle and the east west borderlines. And Oncor handles all electric delivery in the state. We were fine til they fucked up the “rolling blackouts”. edit: I’m just mad that so much of this was avoidable but money got in the way.
Yeah, just something we do every year up here, called "winterizing", where you go drain hoses, pipes, shut off water, blow out irrigation lines, etc.
FYI, Canadians: SelectBlinds.ca is having a 50% off sale today. I just saved hundreds of bucks on an order for some remote controlled, motorized blackout blinds for my office. Not sure if it's a daily gimmick or what, but thought I'd let y'all know anyway.
For a laugh: my implants are right next to my skin - because mastectomy. They do not hold heat because I don’t have any to give them, and this cold snap has been made more uncomfortable by the two ice blocks on my chest. I was feeling BAD yesterday and couldn’t figure out why. Like everything hurt. then I randomly felt my foob. Holy shit. Now I have heating packs on my chest to warm them up because my tits were cold as a beer from the fridge. I don’t know how that would do for circulation.
Up North all our women get microwavable heating packs inserted instead of silicone for their boob jobs. You guys just aren't prepared for winter.
From what I've seen on FB (from people who freaking live in Texas!) it's the opposite. Lots of memes and jokes about "so much for global warming" etc If this crazy climate shit keeps up, I'm sure we'll see more stuff like this. Extreme weather patterns in areas that don't get them will absolutely fuck off a city. Imagine if San Francisco was hit by a hurricane. Or conversely, they get hit with a 100+ heat wave for a few weeks. SF had a minor heat wave last year and since the in-laws live there, we heard first hand how they had a circle of friends who each had a responsibility to check on another one in the group as no one has AC or a pool. I just laughed, clicked the AC down a degree and jumped in the pool. Sissy city folk *sarcasm*
I would actually like to own one. My parents have one and I grew up using it. It comes in handy for a lot of miscellaneous jobs. Use purple power degreaser on your area rug and then power wash it, they get SO clean that way My dad has always had issues with the carborater on his. I think he's had 2 or 3 different models over the years and the carborater is always the fail point. I am not handy enough to deal with that nonsense. BUT I do use non ethanol fuel for all my equipment and I do not think he keeps that on hand. Would that save me from carborater issues? And 2, I'm running out of space to store all this equipment.
Stop using cheap gas. It has ethanol in it, and will fuck up 99% of small engine carbs. Run the highest octane stuff you can find (for me it's 92 from Chevron), and it has minimal ethanol in it. Never had to replace a carb since I started doing that. It was at the suggestion of a friend of m dad's, who ran a small landscaping company. Had a fleet of small engines that would constantly gum up carbs... until he went all high test, all the time.
Boobstraps. Well played. Well, this is round two of this tomfoolery over the course of a decade (actually almost exactly a decade) so we will be taking steps to deal with what we can for future events.
I'm thinking people have to step up and look after their own shit, because it's looking like government won't. https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/ri...t-power-for-days-than-have-more-fed-oversight
I've spent the last two days getting yelled at because I support the current political climate that supports "green energy" and that's why we're in this mess. Apparently. "Solar" is the new "socialism." People will stop at nothing to continue hating each. Never mind that my solar lights kept our pump house warm.
Rick Perry is a giant piece of shit. I hate him. Aside from generators and winterizing as best as we can collectively Texans are kind of bound by the Ercot and Oncor situation. This state hasn’t had democratic legislators overall in like 25+ years. I don’t expect much to change. Cost of living aside - eventually we will leave here. Tarrant county went blue just in time to be gerrymandered to hell and back.
