Do you think Amazon has a "Prime Day" just to test the limits? To find out what needs to be fixed so they can handle more transactions in a smoother manner in the future? IE; Let's have a major crash now for a day, fix the weak links and that way it will run smoother when our daily load hits those numbers.

No, because that's lost revenue, and bad PR... I think they just ran into a problem under very high load that is very complex and difficult to test for. They for sure do tons of testing, but sometimes you just have a billion possible permutations that you have to test so you can't.

Netflix, on the other hand, has about 10% of it's PRODUCTION system intentionally fail all the time to ensure that error handling works as expected.

They call the code that does that the Simian Army.

    https://medium.com/netflix-techblog/the-netflix-simian-army-16e57fbab116

I primarily develop systems that are called "cloud services", using things like Kubernetes or Spring Boot infrastructures running in AWS, Google Cloud, Cloud Foundry, etc. Netflix has given HUGELY to the Spring services development environment (it's Open Source), primarily in the fault tolerance and failure detection and handling areas.

There are things called "design patterns", that are a generic mechanism to handle common scenarios. One such design pattern is a "circuit breaker", which behaves the same in software as it does in an electrical circuit. Netflix basically provided a ton of libraries like this: https://spring.io/guides/gs/circuit-breaker/

The point that I'm trying to make is that the failure handling is more about the software being built than the actual hardware that is running it. Well, you need both, but the software is harder to do than the hardware is.

    This is funny.

The video picture isn't clickbait. It might actually be my favorite one (and not just because of the ass).

Is there a way to sharpen an $8 paring knife that's more cost effective than just buying a new $8 paring knife?

How much time do you have?

And do you have the right sharpening gear?

Personally, I have a complete set of Japanese water stones that make this process pretty trivial... takes maybe 10 minutes to get a nice edge on any of my knives (assuming I don't have to grind a nick out of the edge or something drastic like that).

I enjoy doing it, as it's somewhat therapeutic... sit in the shop, watch tv, sharpen steel.

The sharpening gear being an order of magnitude or more more expensive than the knife itself is part of that cost-effective stumbling block.

Yeah, my setup is primarily for woodworking edges (chisels, blades, planes, scrapers, etc), and it's also expensive enough to make people say, WTF!?... but you can get a not-too-shitty diamond grit sharpening set for relatively cheap that could do something similar. It won't be perfect, but it'll put a reasonable edge back on a cheap knife.

Do you have a bench grinder? It will look like shit and probably not be a great edge, but you should certainly be able to make it sharper.

You just have to be careful about putting too much heat into the blade and having it lose any hardness that it had originally. Not so much the edge, but the rest of the blade is usually hardened for stiffness.

It's also hard to get a bench grinder with a grit high enough to give a good edge on anything more than a lawnmower blade.

Yea, for sharpening gouges for wooden lathes requires a special disk that is generally a higher grit and made to try and keep the blade cool.

Or, mail it to Nett, $3.85 plus return postage of the same. Challenge him by saying you don't think he has the skills to get it sharp. Comes in just under $8.
