Survival panic always seems impulsive and miscalculated. I think the dumbest example was Y2K, because it was an impending disaster that only seemed to effect the disembrained. Countless morons snatching all the beef jerky, bottled water and Cheese Whiz off the shelf why, so you could survive until the end of February? Digging in, arming yourself and taking your chances in Thunderdome seemed like the far more intelligent choice. Grabbing a few supplies seems logical for a storm, not for the end of all civilization as we know it.
It also boggles my mind how few people are prepared for any kind of emergency at all. I keep a stock of food, water, and various supplies ready at all times in a closet in my laundry room. The food and water gets rotated out every few months, the old stock gets donated to food banks and shelters if it's still in good shape, and it only takes a few hours at most to get everything together. I'm prepared, the local food banks gets a massive donation several times a year, and if shit goes down my family is looked after. Aside from crippling poverty, there's really no reason not to do it.
Probably because theyre dietary staples and how quickly they tend to perish compared to fruits, vegetables and canned goods? No idea. Up here, its a joke that during Blizzards people must really like making french toast.
After almost 2 months my Z28 is finally here. Filthy, but here. It's got some balls, but you can tell it's been sitting for a year.....it's like an old dog waking up from a nap. It's going to need to stretch, lick it's balls and shake off the cobwebs...but it'll be fine after a few tanks of gas.
It's eerily calm here right now...its actually perfect BBQ weather(not that I'm BBQing at all). Daughter and the dog are out west, I've just put the generator in place and finished hurricane-proofing the house as much as I can. Time to have a beer.
Interesting thing I read today for hurricane proofing your house....close all your interior doors. It's not perfect, but it does help compartmentalize pressure and may just be enough to keep your roof in place if a window is broke out. At worst, it couldn't hurt. Good luck.
I actually heard that same thing from someone when we were hurricane-proofing the office. Definitely doing that. Does anyone have a better general idea of where to put the generator besides the garage? Its gas so I'm worried about the whole carbon-monoxide thing.
If you have time, go buy a CO monitor or two. Put one in the garage, one in the house where you're going to be sleeping. I'd say it really depends on the layout of the house. If the garage is to the side of living spaces, it's not quite as bad as if it's under a bedroom or something. If it's blowing and storming out, I'd say leave the garage door cracked a foot or so, or any other windows you have in the garage open a bit... that should keep that shit cleaned out fairly well. If it's nice out (as in not blowing trees around at 200 mph), then maybe run it in the back yard. Maybe chain it to a tree, or your deck, etc. For that matter, maybe even under your deck. Or an upstairs outside balcony if you have one. Totally depends on what your place looks like, really.
Well the garage is on the side of the house, and goes into the laundry room which goes into the kitchen/main area. The only other place I can think of is the sun room(basically a screened in porch) but that could be a problem for obvious reasons. And the fact that there's a lot of glass windows around that area. There's no windows in the garage so I'll crack it open a foot or two if I have to. I was told to do it 3 hours on, 3 hours off for the refrigerator/TV/microwave when the power inevitably goes out, so we'll see how that goes.
For your fridge and freezer, an hour every 12 or so would probably be lots... just don't open the fucking thing. If you have a cooler, use that to keep "regular use" stuff you might need out of the fridge, thereby keeping it cooler, longer. Maybe even crank the cold up (down?) so that it's slightly colder than normal so the cold would last longer. $0.02
If you're bored and looking for something to do, grab a thermometer and keep a long of fridge/freezer temps to see how long you can go before it has to be turned back on.
Browser plug-ins... there are a few of them that download most YouTube and other embedded media. They try hard to not let you do it, but as quickly as they try to secure it, the pirates catch up. For instance, I follow auto racing, and IMSA does a great job of putting them up on YouTube a few days after the fact... no commercials, etc. I don't like watching that stuff via YouTube, so I download them and serve them up to my TV via AppleTV and Plex. Or download to my phone or iPad to watch on a flight, etc. And in other news, the new iPhone Xs Max is a cool $2,000 Canadian... plus another $250 for the AppleCare. What. The. Fuck.
Yea I saw that shit today. They will probably still sell a good bit of them, but I feel like at this price point, people might start looking elsewhere. You can get a MacBook Pro cheaper than an iPhone now. That’s crazy to me.
So what's the latest best plugin to download this media? Also is it like the bad old days of VCR where it has to be played through and recorded "live"? Download in the background? I need to nut up and get a vpn so I can download all the glorious 1080p and 4k porn without Reality Kings sending me cease and desist letters.
I seem to have good luck with "Flash and Video Download"... works pretty well for me. That, and "Better Subscriptions for YouTube". http://www.fnvfox.com/ In other news... The space station took a pic of the hurricane this morning: Fucking hell. Good luck everyone... stay safe.
