Yeah, this has whole chickens on for under $5, 15 lbs of free range chicken breasts for $90, etc. Prices are probably half of Costco. And having met the guy, and seeing the quality he gave for fucking DOG TREATS, I'm pretty optimistic. We'll see how it looks when it's delivered.
Yeah... I converted one of the upstairs bedrooms to a pantry and put a huge standing deep freeze in it (one that goes super cold, like -20°C), with a bunch of stainless wire racks from ULine... super handy. That, along with the big chest freezer in the basement, stores a lot of shit for us. Buying in bulk at the right time of year is a huge cost savings.
@Nettdata , yeah it makes sense that they are relatively small fires. I hadn't heard about any of them. I bet we are getting more smoke from WA and Canada. We definitely had more smoke today. Our AQI is very unhealthy. This evening the dusky sky looked almost purple. Pics never capture it.
In the Seattle area this weekend and the air has definitely become smokier throughout the weekend. AQI says 172 right now
Even if it isn't necessarily cheaper, it'll be better and more flavorful! Unfortunately we don't eat enough beef to make it work buying a 1/4 cow or whatever we did once upon a time.
Yeah, we don't eat a lot of beef. On a whim, I got some stew meat for beef tips about a months ago. It was the first time my kid ate beef that wasn't a happy meal so I took the opportunity to explain about where meat comes from. The first questions were pure disbelief. "Does beef grow outside?" (Lol yeah, kinda). "We eat COWS?!" Previous conversations were heavy on dairy info. I figure it's easier at this age. But yeah, as tempted as I am to get 1/4 beef, it would take us a long time (or a big diet pivot) to go through it. Pork now....we do eat a lot of pork products.
The CSA I was a member of sold a 25 lb "beef box" with the following breakdown: steaks (rib, New York, top sirloin), 6 lbs. roasts, 6 lbs. ground beef, 8 lbs. short ribs, stew meat, kabobs, etc. 5 lbs. Much more manageable than a fraction of a cow.
While I was looking around at various options, it was REALLY hard to find an option that didn't force a monthly subscription onto you... "build your box". I just want something a-la-carte that I can shop for whenever I need to fill the freezer... some stuff every month, some stuff every 3 months. For instance, they had a 5 lbs prime rib on for $10/lb, so I got one. I'm not going to cook one every month, but it's a nice treat every so often. Chicken/pork? Go through it much more regularly.
I think a lot of them are independent farms who rely on the consistency of demand. They know ahead of time how many of each animal they need to raise and slaughter, rather than trying to maintain an ad-hoc inventory. Mine wasn't monthly though; they did a slaughter every six months or so I think. You could look for one with a less frequent schedule.
I've used this site in the past to find local farms to buy bulk animal shares from. Some have direct pickups, some do CSA's, you just have to look and see what works best for you individually. @Nettdata looks like they also have some listings for Canada, so you might be able to find something local to yourself.
So it was the wife's and mine 13th anniversary today. We both forgot. She texted me happy anniversary this morning, and she said the only reason she remember was a memory notification on facebook.
During Covid I talked to farmers that were selling full uncut pigs for 50 bucks total. Butchers were booked 18 months out. Crazy time. You don't know any places that sell full animals you could butcher yourself do you? Know you live in Ohio too. Id like to get a full pig and split it with my family. Id do all the butchering.
We used to be able to get full pigs for pig roasts... they'd just gut and hang them for us, and we'd pick them up from the butcher.
The whole MRR thing makes a lot of sense for businesses and planning, but man, I'm way WAY over subscriptions. I really just want to be able to buy off the rack shit without 3 or 4 screens of upsells from those sort of things, plus all of the dark patterns.
