Same here. Make a joke about my wife's appearance, you better have excellent dental coverage. For all we know this wasn't the first time Rock joked about it. But you can bet cash money Rock, or perhaps anyone, won't be making that joke around Will again.
Unlike past years, though, it wasn't seen because it is pretentious pandering only playing in limited run or art house theatres. It's just because it's only on Apple TV.
I would do it. I would love to find out if one of these rich twats are as hard as they pretend to be in movies (We found out years ago that River Phoenix wasn’t). I wish that while Smith was walking off the stage stairs that Rock kicked him in the centre of his asshole
Or just stopped the show and roasted him for like 5 minutes. I don’t know. Either you can hit people or you can’t. I’m reading endless online takes about black womens’ hair and okay I get it. At the end of the day, a comedian was struck across the face for a joke. Was it a good joke? Not really. I don’t think it matters though.
I see it as a joke that was done in front of the world that hurt her, emotionally, and Will reacted to that. I can only imagine how they were both looking forward to the night, spending days getting ready for it, sitting front and centre, looking forward to potentially winning an award, only to be made fun of and feel incredibly self-conscious due to a medical issue you've been struggling with. Whether he knew it or intended it or not, Rock caused her pain, and I think it's bullshit to just brush it off because it was a joke. If he made fun of a kid dying from cancer, would that be funny? Rock is free to say what he wants... but in this case he triggered some personal repercussions. I'm not saying Will did the right thing... but I'm also understanding why he did what he did. I honestly think it took a lot of balls to do what he did in front of the world. I think they both fucked up.
Yeah, I can see him not knowing and just making an off-hand joke. I think people forgot what a big deal was made in the late 90s over Demi Moore actually shaving her head for GI Jane as though it was unthinkable for a woman to go “so far” for a role, and if an actress shaved her head late night hacks would make a “GI Jane 2” comment. So Rock’s gear whirred, came up with that reference, and shit got out of hand. Basically a lesson in the dangers of any remark about someones physical appearance.
I agree with this. You can’t just walk up on stage and assault somebody because they made a joke, no matter how dumb the joke is. Well, I guess you can if you’re a celebrity, now. This is why they should have Ricky Gervais host everything. He doesn’t make jokes about appearance, just about personalities, actions, and shitty behavior.
The issue I have is that there were no (obvious) repercussions for smith’s actions. I’m of the belief that making fun of someone’s appearance, even if he didn’t know about a disease or whatever — I didn’t — is kinda a low hanging fruit and a professional should be better than that in most cases (unless it’s Mitch McConnell). regardless, I don’t think it warranted smith assaulting the dude. It was a not great joke, and it shoulda been left at that. Smith could have left him being the fool on stage and talked to him later. Still, I get why he did it. I’m defensive of my wife too and can’t say I wouldn’t act illogically. Chris Rock handled it like a champ though, and I wish woulda went off on him with all the jokes he wanted to make. You’re there for comedy, make comedy. What doesn’t sit well with me is them just allowing smith to sit back down and shout like a drunken fan at sporting event, never mind accept an award later, was too far. He should have been escorted out on the spot, at minimum. But he wasn’t, because celebrities are better than you and I.
Regardless of what Rock or Smith did, the biggest failure by far was on the Producers. But I bet they were loving it. This is small potatoes. As someone mentioned before, they let Weinsten carry on with his shit for how many decades, so someone slapping someone else in the face on stage is just good ratings. Welcome to Hollywood.
As long as the prospect of consequences for either party is there we should move along (Rock already got his). Rock won’t do anything. The Academy should do something but with the situation I don’t think they’ll do anything outside of a strongly worded tweet.
They made these choices that night: -that everyone had to see Will Smith smack the shit out of Chris Rock, and the yelling after -that it would be too low to show Will Smith crying to the point of drooling And remember, there’s a guy up there telling them what camera feed to show. They were fucking grinning the whole time I bet.
The Academy should do themselves a solid by keeping absolutely still and shutting the fuck up. Those soulless cunts had no issue with giving Bryan Singer work AND Oscar nominations knowing full well what kind of person he is, there is no low that they can’t sink to, no lie they won’t cover up. They protect sickos who rape children, period. Who gives a fuck what they think about this.
Will Smith would have done better to take the next opportunity he was on stage and call out the stupid joke. Like every comedian on the planet, of course Chris Rock will go for the cheap laugh over caring whether or not the joke is tasteful. It's just the way comedians work. But hey, if my partner had someone publicly insult her, I'd probably act irrationally, too. Best of all, this doesn't affect me even a tiny bit, so my only investment here is to get a chuckle out of one millionaire slapping the shit out of another millionaire, on an awards show where millionaires normally sit around and politely pat each other on the back while ignoring how horrific half of them are. Everyone involved in this is an idiot.
