So...that new, expensive Mantle card I posted in the finance thread? I got it on Saturday and immediately felt sick. The guy had specifically put in the item description "No print defects or discoloring, bad picture." The coloring is all fucked up and it has a print defect. I could live with the PD, but not the coloring...someone left that thing in direct sunlight for a long time, probably after it was graded. I would say the coloring would knock it down from it's current PSA 6 to a 2 or 3. Seller doesn't accept returns, but I'm fixin' to make a whole lot of noise if my return request gets blown off.
It's an absolute shame that someone left that thing in the sun. It was a high end card and dead centered, in a set that's notorious for centering issues.
Did you buy it on eBay? Most of their stuff falls under “100% buyer protection.” I used to do a lot of the ebay sales at the music store, and they almost always take the customer’s side in disputes. Especially if you can explain that he wasn’t accurately describing it.
Yep, got it from e-bay. This is literally copy and pasted from his description "No PD or discolorations bad picture". So, we'll see what happens. I don't see how they won't take my side since he specifically addressed what I'm complaining about and dismissed it as a bad picture. The picture is fine, he lied.
yeah, as long as it was a legit ebay purchase, paid through ebay and not a workaround method, they should take care of you.
Countdown to seller response: "Buyer did not send the card back in the same condition that it was mailed. Refund denied."
The seller probably isn't going to risk getting his account nuked for $700. Ebay processes those transactions themselves, and they really hate having chargebacks show up on their merchant account.
Sounds like it isn't a defect but rather poor storage (ie left in the sun too long) that will lower the rating.
It gets kind of tricky. But when you get it graded you can opt for a true grade with a qualifier (PD-print defect. OC-off center. MK- someone wrote on the card, or MC-mis-cut), or you can have it knocked down 2 grades without the qualifier on it. This card would've graded originally as PSA 8 PD, but the person opted for no qualifier so it got knocked down to PSA 6. And honestly, on this particular card, the PD it has is not uncommon. My PSA 4 had the same defect. It appears on about 5-10% of the '61 Mantles I've seen.
So you’re saying that it is an honest rating, but it was falsely advertised as having no discoloration. Am I correct on that?
Yeah, the grading is fine, except for the coloring, which I'm sure happened after the card was graded. I thought PSA used something like Low-e to block ultra violet and give some protection, but apparently not. I'm glad I didn't figure that out by leaving one of my own cards out to see what happens.
Yeah, UV sucks. My wife’s old job gave her a going-away present wall sign, and we never hung it up, but left it sitting on a shelf. One little part was in direct light and faded hardcore. I currently have it sitting on a windowsill with a piece of paper taped over the faded side to try and even it out. Thanks for putting up with the questions!
