I have a Celestron as well. I could not find any of the reasonably-priced filters a week ago. Everything was sold out except for the high-end shit and my telescope doesn't justify purchasing those.
Looked very eclipsy through the glasses. I tried to take a picture with my old phone that I didn't care if it ruined the lens, but didn't work great. Shadows look neat, though.
Yep... I was surprised with how much we got to see... it got dark enough that the cats freaked out and the street lights came on. Still had a very small sliver that was barely there, but yeah, it was very cool.
About a month ago I went down that "filtered telescopy" rabbit hole and it was shocking at just how deep it gets almost immediatelyl. Crazy fucking expensive, crazy fast. "Eclipse solar filters" are almost scoffed at.
I am ambivalent about reporting that there was no sign of the eclipse in Rome today. Some of my thoughtful friends, knowing that I was missing out, sent me pictures (safely taken) of the eclipse and they were very cool. The pictures were cool, though my friends are also. In other news, the wine here is fantastic.
We had 98% coverage here, but we also had about the same amount of cloud coverage as well. It got darker, it got cooler, and we didn’t see shit. I will say though, I enjoyed the coverage on the national news, seeing so many people sharing a moment of something positive for a change.
Weather was perfect, we got about 3 minutes of totality and the drives down and back weren’t remotely as brutal as I was concerned they might be. Toddler was pretty excited about it and there were a bunch of vultures swooping around dramatically. It was a pretty perfect afternoon. Kind of makes me want to travel to eclipses in the future.
We got our 80% percent. somebody said a few days ago “80% coverage is still 0% totality” and man, that hits home today. once you’ve seen totality, anything not near it is just kinda…meh. I did teach my coworkers how to make a pinhole camera though, that was fun.
Yeah I ended up skipping Indy and just drove north for an hour and a half to the center line. Took maybe 20 minutes longer on the way back. Waze recalculated twice and I avoided the big freeways. I look back and wish I’d have driven in 2017 that much more. I didn’t believe people when they described the difference. I do feel bad for people that had to completely change plans or missed it because of the weather.
Yeah, there was only a sliver of light showing down here... But it was still daylight. You didn't miss anything if you had to stay inside.
That’s where I was. The real deal, I haven’t seen an event come close to that since Hale Bopp. I really does change the entire climate around you like an act of god. That chill when the lights go out was downright ghostly.
