Semantic satiation. I occasionally have it happen with really common words like ”the” and it really bugs me out.
FUCKING THANK YOU. FUCK. I had professor tell me that phrase for that phenomenon and I forgot it and googling never turned anything up for pert near 20 years.
After a discussion with hubs about blue waffles, and then googling some stuff, I just learned that the blue waffle was an internet hoax from 2010 and involved an altered photo and possible genital mutilation. I totally fell for it. To be honest, I don't think I examined it that closely.
It’s a fake photo, but a great reaction prank to be put alongside the legends such as Meatspin, Goatse and LemonnParty. I remember we had a big thing over it on a WDT back in the day when it was new and all the rage with the cool kids in Bed-Stuy,
The first one of those I fell victim to was tubgirl. I haven’t seen that picture in more than 2 decades but I still remember it better than I’d like to. The same friend showed me Pink Flamingos when I was 14 and stoned. Wasn’t ready for that one either. Clearly she was a great influence.
I had a roommate who I traded shock sites/funny links with all the time. Goatse made him particularly uncomfortable, even among all of the other gross ones. So, one night when I was drunk and he was gone, I probably spent 2 hours putting Goatse images into various parts of his computer. Scheduled tasks to pop things up weeks later, inserting it into documents, burying one in his screensaver slideshow, replaced his shutdown screen with it, etc. Even wrote a little routine that would copy the picture to his desktop with a random filename every 20 boots or something. For months after that he'd be using his computer I'd randomly hear, "goddammit, what the fuck??" I think he was still finding them when he got a new computer.
I don't have near the tech level to do anything remotely close to that drunk. Or sober. The best I could do was open Meatspin in a new tab and the minimize the window until my brother used his computer again. I don't remember the exact spin number but it was way up there.
I got a coworker years ago with Lemon Party. A group of us were sitting around in the office and I just casually named dropped ”Lemon Party” one asked ”whats that?” So I told him he should check out lemonparty.org. He asked ”this isn’t one of those shock sites is it” ”Nope” I said. ”Its a dot org” ”Oh right, yeah dot orgs are always legit… oh fuck you”
That legit looks like a guy I used to know. I haven't seen him in about ten years. What's the backstory on that meme?
