It’s not common, but we have a few patches of larches around our area. They really stand out once they start turning.
winter is gonna SUCK down here. Horses already getting their winter coats, squirrels have gone apeshit with acorns, deer already getting super close to the house (heat radiates out a bit so they stay warm), birds have started migrating. I haven't seen any meteorologists talk about it yet, but nature is well aware.
Meanwhile my house is right where the fog bank usually starts to dissolve in the middle of San Francisco and I’m sitting on my deck in shorts in 90 degree weather in the shade. We have no A/C (see above: SF) so the only solution is to drink ice cold rosé and read a book.
There are entire larch valleys around here - it's kind of crazy. They're incredibly short-lived, though. As someone who grew up in New England and watched leaves change my whole life, it's shocking how much faster the larches go from green > gold > dead. You have maybe 10 days of peak time.
I’ll try to get some pics from here to show you how few we have. They’re obviously planted there by someone and stand out come late Fall. It’s actually kinda funny, especially compared to your pic.
Florida is about to get absolutely demolished y'all. Tampa is completely fucked. In the next 24-48 hours, I fully anticipate the largest mass evacuation in US history. Or at least it will be attempted.
Gotta flee Commiefornia and their stifling regulations on ::checks notes:: homeowners insurance... ah fuck.
My nephew moved to St Petes earlier this year and this will be his third hurricane. I’m worried about him, but he’s prepared, and a pretty sharp kid. I’m being Uncle Misanthropic and texting him anyway because I’m worried about him.
This season reminds me of the summer of 2004. We had 3 named storms come through Florida in just a couple of months. But they weren’t cat4 or 5’s though. They can’t take much more of this down there.
My dad’s cousins still have places south of Tampa. One was flooded the other hasn’t been back but house wasn’t accessible because of debris. Fun double wallop for them. They both have houses in other areas so they aren’t stupid enough to stick around.
Facebook friend posted a status asking if she should evacuate (she just moved to the Tampa area). Some of the responses were ranting about HAARP. She got some dumbass friends.
The wind shear is near the cold front that's currently pushing through the South at the moment. I think it got organized a hell of a lot quicker than earlier models said it would. Wind shear is supposed to downgrade it to a Cat 3 just before it hits the Florida coast. Or at least that's what current models say.
