I wish I'd kept a diary back then. June 16 1985: Crystal blew me in a canoe in front of the Fellowship of Christian Trout Fisherman while they were casting off a dock hoping to catch fish at 7am and we happened to drift out of a cove. She lifted her head just long enough to shake her tits at them and yell something about all their daughters are doing the same thing because they're all horrible fathers. Or something like that. I just raised my beer can and yelled "Hey y'all! Getting my dick sucked over here!" Because what the hell else was I supposed to do? Some insane girl was sucking my dick, shaking her tits at strangers and insinuating their daughters were doing the same thing. In truth, I have no idea if they were Christian Trout Fishermen, if it was June, or 1985, or if her name was Crystal. And I probably haven't thought of that memory in 30 years. But now that I think about it, it's fucking hilarious all over again.
We ran the shit out of them on a rented race track to get the ice off the line so we could put the real race car out. We had 3 rentals that were returned with NO brakes... one of them almost didn't make it back because it was metal on metal and had problems stopping.
Ha... was just noodling my fingers off. So... yeah... they are different. They feel different, and bring out different stuff. The PRS is just a fucking pristine machine... it's like a precision instrument that is just so easy to play. The LP is a more chunky, grooving feel. The Tele (uhhh... did I tell you I bought a Fender Custom Tele?) is just so amazingly bluesy soulful and full-on "80's kinda-grunge garage band" that it's fun to play. So yeah... my favourite so far is the PRS... and the LP and Tele are a close tie for 2nd.
I haven't really played electric in about 4 years... I bought a 6-string Ovation about then and have just played that, for the most part. I'm now back in that super excited state that is almost like rediscovering playing guitar all over again, and am playing a lot, just about every day. It's so much fun.
I have another gig tonight, our second of the year so far. After tonight we’ll have officially played more shows than all of 2020, even though a couple ended up canceled ( second year in a row for that one ). Venues are still a little hesitant to book live music I think, but the response from people makes it clear that live music was seriously missed.
I miss concerts so much. Not the ones where I was nut to butt with people but outdoors and live music and cold beer.
February last year I had whole summer concert schedule worked out. Friggin Rage Against the Machine. Nothing.
I didn't know you picked up a Tele. I've always wanted one for those times I'm in the mood to play bluesy stuff...which usually lasts just a short time until I get the idea "Man, this would sound awesome fuzzed out" and peg the gain, which kind of negates the reason for having a Tele in the first place. A fuzzed out Tele just sounds wrong. I still want one though.
Teles are my favorite. If Jimmy Page can play the solo on Stairway with a Tele, then it’s a solid rock guitar to me.
Yeah... a lot of Canadian rock from when I was growing up (80's) was more bluesy rock that was personified by strats and teles. Candian bands that you've probably never heard about but are almost as Canadian as hockey and maple syrup: The Tragically Hip 54-40
I’m absolutely loving it. My first ever guitar was a Gibson SG that my parents got for me for my birthday. Me, being stupid, was pissed it didn’t have a whammy bar, so I sold it and bought a Charvell instead. (Still have it, actually). The 2nd guitar I ever bought was a red/white strat when I was in my Pink Floyd and Clapton phase. Again in the 80’s. The Tele I bought is one of those “relics” where it comes out of the custom shop all beat to shit. I really dig it, and it plays fucking amazingly well. It’s way more of a guitar than I am a player.
I'd never noticed before that there is a very distinct Canadian rock sound...that 54-40 (Who I've never heard of before) song could just as easily be Bryan Adams or Red Ryder. It would be boring. Trust me, I lived it. Here's a pretty good approximation of me in the 80's, just add in yelling, doing lots of drugs, and lighting shit on fire.
The white point's a bit off, but you get the idea... it's beat to hell... but the neck/action feels like someone's played it for 10 years to get to that sweet spot.
The Husband got 5yo a guitar and amp last year. It’s been an adventure. They sit and play together upstairs a LOT. I’m really glad kindergarten will have music lessons.
Exactly... that's what I was referring earlier to when I was saying that "Canadian garage band" sound. Even more examples: Northern Pikes Kim Mitchell:
I used to jam with these guys who were on our label... still one of my favourite albums to just put on and just zone out to.
That's awesome... a friend of mine is still doing that with his kid, and his kid is 18. They spend hours in the music room in the basement playing guitar, bass, drums, etc. "We suck, but we sure have fun doing it."
