Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? No need to be so formal good sir Bundy will do just fine. And might I suggest ordering some Bundaberg rum. And if you're out there AlmostGaunt don't poison his mind, Bundy Rum is awesome.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? I am stupid drunk, so please forgive me, but this phenomenon absolutely works in reverse and it never fucking fails for me. I don't know if it works this way for anyone else, but tonight, I went to a bar with a girl and I got hit on mercilessly. I don't normally get hit on much, but girls slipped me 3 numbers tonight when getting drinks. I love this girl though. Her response? Pick a pretty one and bring her along. Sadly, I wasn't smooth enough to pull this off, but it leaves me hoping for the future.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Woodtick As disgusting as it might sound, when I was a kid I would pull them off dogs that were that size and smash them with hammers.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Yeah I know. I have to look some stuff up for a project for my Parasitology class. Ticks are by far the tamest things that we've looked at.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Lampreys are more predators than parasites. edit: I guess the correct term would be "micro predator" because they don't take out an entire animal at once.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Well to the Lake Superior fisherman around here they are basically a parasite. No one wants to catch a mountable lake trout or salmon with a giant scar on it from a lamprey. I guess I'm not sure why a lamprey would be considered a predator when all they do is latch onto a fish, not hunt it.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Parasitism generally refers to a symbiosis in which one member benefits and one suffers some detriment. The lines are fuzzy, as with anything you try to categorize. It's a continuum. Parasites that are really good at what they do won't harm their host whatsoever. Ideally, the parasite won't harm their host at all unless they need to skip to the next host and their stay is temporary. On the other hand, some parasites, like parasitoids, completely kill their host. So are they a predator or a parasite? Since the lamprey doesn't spend their entire life or life stage on the fish, I would say they are a micro predator. They eat a little and go on their way, kind of like mosquitoes.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Maybe I'm just drunk but doesn't any legitimate parasite harm its host in some way or another?
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Fucking hate ticks. One of my first bush exercises we'd been out for a week and I didn't even know there were ticks out there until someone mentioned it and then we were picking the little bastards off for the next week. There are a couple of nasty paralysis ticks here in Aus that will kill dogs and other animals if you don't catch them early.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? I would be a better idiot if I had read anything leading up to this point. But I am to drunk to function, so I will just say you people are awesome, and I will take my very drunk ass to bed. (Honestly if it comes in one drinkable container, it counts as one beer. So the five pitchers I had tonight is only five beers. I have no idea why I am this drunk.)
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? Nope. Generally, the definitive host (the host that contains sexually reproducing parasites) is not harmed. Sure, the parasite is there. It gets some nutrition from the host and passes its offspring on, but the host isn't going to die or even be sick from the host. Its presence is neutral. The name of the game is developing to the point of sexual reproduction and then having as many offspring as possible. Many parasites have several hosts in different stages of their life. A lot of times, they have an effect on the behavior or health of these temporary hosts that lead to the premature death of the host and the transmission of themselves. These are the instances that you think of when you think of parasites being deadly.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? You know you have hit a low point in your shift when you start playing classic Mariah Carey.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? What's wrong with Mariah Carey? I'd pee all over her boobs. First post.
Re: Weekend Drunk Thread, Nov 4-6? As much as I don't like it, in the case of the salmon or lake trout, everything you have said is the truth.
