Washington Post's Cairo bureau chief has been arrested, as have two dozen other reporters from CNN, BBC, etc.

Detaining foreign press is a desperate move. It makes them look like they can't maintain control. Another in a string of terrible decisions by your friendly, neighborhood dictator.

Wow. A reporter on AJE just said that in another square (not Tahrir) three people dead with gunshot wounds to the head that he was told came from sniper fire.

Of course my online feed decided this was the perfect time to shit the bed.

VP Suleiman is on state TV saying that outside forces have infiltrated the anti-government protesters. How he knows this is beyond me, because he claims to have no idea who the people showing up on buses to fight the protesters were.

Egyptian parliament suspended pending some sort of judicial review (I think of the last elections), expected to take 3 weeks.

VP Suleiman says the people calling for Mubarak to leave are not part of Egyptian culture, and "we all respect Mubarak as father and leader."

"End your sit-in. Your demands have been answered."

    Is he fucking serious?

Word on AJZ is the protesters are trying to rally more people so they can simultaneously hold the square and march on the palace. In other words, "You don't have to come and resign, we lookin' for you, we gon' find you."

I think I heard somewhere that Thursday is supposed to be a day of prayer, and Friday is supposed to be a "day of protest"... is this accurate? Do Egyptians really have a specific day designated for protest?

Mubarak's strategy of "deny what's going on, belittle what's going on, then fuck up the people that started what's going on" is clearly working out for him. In fact, it's working out so well for him that he appears to be pissing off the protesters even more. This is not gonna end well, or quickly.

And to think, for a while there I actually thought mubarak's speech was gonna be the end of this.

This guy is either insanely delusional, or he's trying to piss them off to the point of violence so he can cry woe is me. I'd say it's the former, and part of me wants them to give him a reason to cry.

On another note, I haven't seen any updates on this, but has our government found their backbone in regards to this situation?

The resolve is amazing. I was worried this thing might fizzle out, but it's continued.

Security forces vans have apparently been ordered to hit and run.

A tweet from the ground (WaelAbbas):
Shame, they have a great bar up there. Fucking crazy.

Can someone explain to me why/what evidence we have that Friday is gonna be a big day?

The only thing I've heard is what I wrote above, that Friday is supposed to be a "day of protest" or some shit but it was only mentioned once in passing.

Yet I keep hearing everywhere that the violence is supposed to ramp up, shit's gonna hit the fan, bullets are gonna fly, people gonna die, that kind of stuff.... why? Watching the news, it looks like the army is keeping the peace right now, and it's all starting to settle back down.

During the big million man gathering, they were discussing Friday as the big day for demonstrations, of course, it was supposed to be a million man march, not a million man stand in place, so who knows.

"Egypt President Hosni Mubarak told ABC News that he would step down right away but did not want to risk plunging his nation into chaos."

Has this guy looked out the window or heard about anything going on?

I've read that the protesters are calling tomorrow the "Day of Departure", basically giving Mubarak a deadline to remove himself from power. After that, I imagine, shit will get even more ugly.

One of the sticking points with Mubarak seems to be that he wants to leave "with dignity." I think that's why he tried to finish out his term, he would step down, but get to feel like he's leaving on his own terms.

There is of course, another way to leave with dignity:

Too bad all the blades have been given to the thugs.

This all also emphasizes the importance of always giving your opponent a way out. Give them a road to retreat, and they will take it. When you back them into a corner, they fight.

Dude, fuck this. They shut off the video feed from the square. So now I'm just watching CNN showing the same dozen clips or so over and over.

Not that I'm hoping for violence, but if the shit really hits the fan, I damn well want to see it. Live. God we are so spoiled by tv and news coverage....

The Muslim Brotherhood has stated they will dissolve the peace treaty with Israel if they come to power. Who's shocked?

It's been really informative and interesting reading all of your posts, but some parts of the thread really remind me of this song.
