Perhaps the gayest thing to come out of the clashes in Egypt (yes, even gayer than grown men holding hands):

Statement from the Office of the VP. It's unclear whether the agreements were just among the opposition representatives, or if the VP also agreed to the terms.

"2. A peaceful transition of authority within the constitutional framework;"

This may be the key thing, if this means Mubarak would transfer authority to the Prime Minister (under the Constitution, he cannot transfer power to the VP).

    It was amusing to hear.

Egyptian army is setting up barbed wire to restrict protesters' space. Warning shots fired to keep protesters back.

Some more info on the meeting discussed above. The Muslim Brotherhood stated that it wasn't at the meeting to negotiate, but to express their demands. It's not clear whether other groups were there with the same attitude.

Apparently Hilary Clinton told the Egyptian Prime Minister yesterday that it's unacceptable to detain journalists.

This is the last chance they get, and after that it's only three more chances (and another billion dollars in aid).

And I'm sure Numbskull McFuckface will tapdance around it, of course not knowing the meaning of the word "journalists".

I like how the protesters have created their own makeshift jails and throw in any goons that show violence.

I'm surprised the jail (which I believe is basically just the steps of a metro station) hasn't gotten more play. It's a really interesting angle on this, though the protesters may have their own reasons to keeping reporters from seeing a lot of it.

What's really odd though is that anyone with an interior ministry ID has been turned away for days. Yet, they keep showing up. You'd think they'd quickly tell their people to stop trying to sneak in. Perhaps Mubarak really doesn't know what's going on at ground level. Entirely possibly his advisers are feeding him the party line.

Interview from January 29th with a member of the NDP. Really gives the impression that they just don't know what's happening on the ground. I really wouldn't be surprised if Mubarak doesn't know the primary demand is for him to go yesterday.

    Dear Egyptian demonstrators,

Please do not damage the Pyramids. We will not rebuild.
    ...

The crowd in Tahrir Square this morning looks a lot like when they had the million+ gathering. Likely in part inspired by the release of the Google exec. Reports are that there are at least several hundred thousand.

But, it's not clear the huge demonstration will get them anything. I think a lot of the international community is going to lose interest, which will just make it easier for Mubarak to play the waiting game. They have enough people to march on the presidential palace and still hold the square.

Thousands of protesters have now set up outside of the Parliament building, starting a second tent city perhaps, about 1 mile south of Tahrir Square. Parliament is not in session, and protesters have so far met no resistance from the police, and have start painting pro-democracy slogans on the building and hanging flags.

Hosni Mubarak says: Let them eat cupcakes.

And in other feel-goody news, I heard that there's a no-smoking section of Tahrir Square. ...Or a smoking section. Some sort of smoking/non-smoking division.
