In case you're wondering just what percentage of Egyptians would support a strict Sharia theocracy, it's a subset of the people praying:

Video from the demonstrations at the Egyptian Parlaiment. One of the people there (I think the Google exec) was talking to Al Jazeera about the demonstration, as there wasn't a live video feed at the time. He said there were a few thousand people there, and while that doesn't sound like much compared to the demonstration at Tahrir Square, a month ago a crowd that size would have been unthinkable.

Reports are coming in that in Wadi Al-Jadid there have been clashes between the police and thousands of protesters, and that the police have been firing live ammunition on the crowds. Casualties are of course unconfirmed, but several news sources are reporting multiple gun shot victims.

I'll admit I haven't been following this story as closely this week.

Have the crowds grown each day? Seems like the protests are still picking up steam.

It's definitely up from it's low (the day after the camel charge). Unions have started joining the protesters, and a second demonstration popped up down the road outside of Parliament. I'd say it looks like they're gaining a little steam.

CNN and AJE both reporting that NDP officials have stated Hosni Mubarak is expected to step down as president of Egypt.

    Wow.

EDIT: An Egpytian friend's phone is lighting up right now, friends are confirming reports. It is highly likely that Mubarak will resign.

A police captain was arrested after his men fired on protesters. 3 more high ranking officials have been banned from leaving the country. Definitely looks like the government is fragmenting.

The NDP chief has stated that Mubarak will announce his resignation tonight.

Now, the real fight begins. Mubarak's ouster is a start, but more of them have to go, Suleiman included, or it will be the same story with a different face.

Scroller on AJE carried the NDP statement.

    Also, from CNN:

For anyone curious about the Egyptian constitution, the worst case scenario for the protesters is Mubarak leaves office. In that case, parliament takes control and must hold elections within 60 days, without altering the constitution. To nominate someone to the presidency, you need support of 1/3rd of parliament, which means no opposition candidates, just another NDP president appointed by parliament.

The better option is that Mubarak stays in office, but delegates all of his powers to the vice president (which is allowed under the Constitution), who can then enact constitutional changes.

Is Mubarak's speech tonight definitely about standing down? From what I've read so far, it seems like just rumors at this point.

The likely situation seems to be a transitional military government with Suleiman at its head, considering that the crowds have blockaded Parliament and expressly rejected the possibility of another NDP official stepping up without challenge.

If he doesn't, he risks having a terrible Friday. Tomorrow is supposed to be the biggest outpouring yet. CIA Chief Panetta is saying its probable, NDP officials are saying its probable, retired Egpytian generals are saying its probable. If Mubarak wavers now, he's facing serious riots.

Fox News has the same information about Mubarak stepping down.

CNN's saying that state tv says mubarak will not step down.

If he doesn't step down, it's gonna be a fucking riot of epic proportions (as if the current protests aren't a riot of epic proportions). Talk about blue balls.
