Military announces it has stepped in to "safeguard the country."

    ...Whatever that means.

Mubarak is expected to address the nation at 3 p.m. EST. AJE has said Tahrir Square is standing-room only, as are the 7 or 8 streets leading to it, and the crowd is growing in every direction. It must be an awesome sight to behold.

BBC Arabic is considering this Statement Number One (bayaan raqm wahid), usually used to signify the first statement announcing a coup and the reasons for it. Which is why it's interesting that there has been no coup.

    Unless I mistranslated, of course.

Arabic has a thing for run-on sentences.

I'm starting to wonder if perhaps Mubarak is suicidal. His statements about being "fed up" with serving Egypt and that he will die in Egypt don't sound particularly hopeful. He's an old man, and may not want his last years to be spent on trial or in exile. He has to know the size of the crowd and what will happen if he doesn't step aside.

If I'm understanding his speech correctly, I expect that the Egyptian people are about to lose control and burn him alive.

This guy just can't take a hint.

I don't understand why the crowd is still in the square. 2 paragraphs in they should have been marching towards the palace.

There is no way he's going without the people dragging his ass out and making it happen.

Basically all he's saying is: "You guys all go home and I'm gonna stay here and make sure everything works out for your sake".

I knew this when going to be bad when he started by framing the situation as him being the father and the citizens his children.

    Someone call child protective services.

What was with that huge roar that just came up from the crowd? Anybody have an idea of what's going on?

They were chanting "get out" (in Arabic). You'll probably hear some "Down, down, Hosni Mubarak" soon.

He absolutely has no idea what has been going on for the last couple of weeks. He's either in a fantasy land or is not getting good information. It's really quite astounding. I really hope they drag his ass from office.

On AJE does it show them raising their shoes? That's an Arabic insult right?

Yes. I think specifically it's the sole of the shoe that's insulting, either relating to the dirt and shit that gets on it, or the idea of being stomped on.

Remember when Bush got a shoe thrown at him? Same deal.
