I wouldn't count him out just yet. He has made it pretty clear that they're going to have to kill him if they want him out of power. With his son's not-so-subtle suggestion at the possibility of civil war if the protests continue, Libya could easily become the most protracted conflict of all. 250+ dead in five days, with reports of anti-tank weapons being used against crowds. It's already ugly, and it could get much, much worse.

    From AJE's Libya blog:

5:40pm: Two civilian helicopters, followed by two Libyan fighter jets, have landed in Malta. Only one of at least seven passengers are reported to be carrying passports. All passengers are currently being held by immigration officials. Al Jazeera's Karl Stagno-Novarra, reporting from Malta, says the Mediterranean island is preparing to be used as a base for evacuation of European citizens from Libya, one hour's flight away

It's only a matter of time before someone crafts a meme out of one of these protest signs.

Holy fucking shit, it's things like this that fucking scare me. Don't these fuckers realize I was only a few miles away from the airport. Jeez. How they allow 2 helicopters and 2 fucken foreign military jets to land here is beyond me, Fuck! I doubt we'll even get to keep the jets. Lets see who the new Libyan leader will be, regardless of what happens I very much doubt there will be democracy in Libya in the near future.

Al Jazeera reporting that that protesters in Tripoli are coming under fire from military fighter jets. Fighters. Against people. Insane.

Apparently it's very close to an all out civil war. Also I've just heard that a group of Libyan officials have just left Libya in a helicopter and they're coming to Malta. Can't confirm the last news though.

Also, David Cameron has just landed in egypt, after trying to cosy up to the Libyan leader they're now calling the situation "unacceptable".

Edit - A video of the fighter jets at the Airport

Are the demonstrators even armed? I've heard of some military units defecting, but it wasn't clear if they just quit their posts or actually took their equipment with them.

Not sure. If they do have equipment it's still no match for the fighter jets which are bombing the demonstrators. Also the Libyans have employed mercenaries from Chad, who don't seem to be too fussy about killing innocent, unarmed people in the streets.

Pilots of fighter jets landing in Malta have been identified as high ranking Colonels in the Libyan air force.

Confirmed as defectors, refused orders to attack protesters.

I've seen reports that said they are indeed armed, or attempting to arm themselves. Apparently, several of them were fighting alongside defected army units to repel mercenaries in Benghazi.

Two colonels took off for Malta, requesting political asylum.

Nothing more than two regime members trying to save their necks.

If their sense of self-preservation is what prevented them from mowing down crowds, I'll take it.

They claimed to be french nationals when they landed, but then quickly requested political asylum. What worries me is that if Gadaffi manages to hold on and retains power, he'll ask the Maltese government to extradite these 2 individuals so that he can execute them. When the Maltese government refuses, he'll probably stop selling us oil and send a few thousands illegal immigrants to our shores.

The jets where French mirage jets, some of my fellow countrymen saw the lighter side of the situation

Reuters reporting that Libyan air force is 'indiscriminately bombing Tripoli'

They're destroying their own capital city. This reeks of desperation. The fall of their second largest city to a mob in a matter of days must have made them nervous, but the government officials giving these orders are writing their own death warrants with stuff like this. No one will blame the protesters for stringing them up on lampposts if they ever lay hands on them.

Its too late for anything else.

They've turned what ever number of moderates against them. The military can only kill their countrymen so long before they have had enough guilt.

6 or 7 Libyan ambassadors (from Libya, not to it) have resigned.
