President of Yemen has instructed his security forces to protect demonstrators calling for an end to his rule.

Wait what the hell? Why are Greeks so butthurt? How do their people plan on reducing the budget if not by austerity?

If the implications weren't so damn grim, Ghaddafi's delusional ramblings would be funny... Osama's henchmen running around at night and spiking everyone's coffee with hallucinogens? Fuuuck.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/02/24/uk-libya-protests-gaddafi-idUKTRE71N4IJ20110224

And the Greeks are butthurt because yes, they realise that budget cuts need to be made, but the man on the street (plus civil servants etc.) don't see why they should pay for the fuckups of others. If austerity means you, your family etc. losing their jobs or facing steep pay cuts, reasoning for the greater good of the country probably won't cut it. Add to the fact that in Greece (or maybe Europe in general) strike & protest culture is very much alive, you get scenes like these.

How throwing petrol bombs at a policeman's head will change the situation is beyond me, but hey, it really was a good throw.

This is why I freaking hate American Media:

I just saw at the top of Drudge Report "GADDAFI SHOT?"

Holy shit! I immediately click on the link and am sent here: http://www.cnbc.com/id/41747049

    Burying the lead a bit?

The reason for that is the word unsubstantiated. It seems that "Gaffafi shot" is an Internet rumor of roughly equivalent legitimacy to that time everyone thought Jeff Goldblum died.

Frankly, I've quit expecting Drudge headlines to match actual linked article content.

The best part about that article is the picture caption.

"Chief, we need a picture, what should we run?"
"Whatever, just get a picture of some fucking nerds. Who can tell the difference?"

It was a rumor powerful enough to temporarily lower the price of gas, it would seem. I would think the lead would be what the rumor was, where it came from, if there were any secondary indications, etc. After that, discuss the effects of the rumor.

I think that says a lot about the state of info/media in Libya. Random rumors that (as far as anyone can tell) just came from unsubstantiated postings on the internet were taken that seriously.

Also, I'm suspicious of CNBC's causal connection between the two things.

    Protests in Pyongyang

Yeah, no way. We think Libya is bad? They bury bodies for breakfast north of the 38th parallel.

A man can dream, though, can't he? A man can dream.

Why would North Koreans ever protest when Dear Leader is such an omnipotent national treasure over there?

The Kim regime showed incredible foresight in the way they manipulated their populace. No communication technology, no outside influence, and swift, deadly response to even an inkling of dissent. Those people are too starved, frightened and ignorant to help themselves. Even if they deposed the Kims, the Chinese would stomp them into dust in a heartbeat. It's almost too depressing to think about.

We really should change the name of this thread to "Shit's Gettin' Real on Earth". This is history unfolding before our eyes. Our kids are going to take college courses based on what happens in the next few months. Anyone else getting chills? I've got chills.

Definitely on all counts. It's kind of scary though that I get the impression a LOT of people don't realize just how important what is going on over there is.

It's slowly starting to dawn on me that shits gettin real over there. Everytime I tune into the news (CNN mostly) it's just more talking head bullshit. I'm not sure how to distinguish their lack of real news to talk about from their inability to Anderson Cooper in there to tell us what is actually happening.

One thing we should learn from the uprisings in the Middle East is that while ordinary folk are willing to take a job and collect a paycheck from the ruling regime, when it comes to killing their neighbors in cold blood, many people will sooner jump out of perfectly good airplanes.

Fuck American news, is my biggest insight from this whole affair. I realized it was bad, but not this bad. Al-Jazeera, UK papers, or bust.

A good point that was made on Al Jazeera was that a lot of what they're showing is the raw footage from protester video or State TV, with very little commentary, other than setting up the shot. The media isn't filtered through celebrity reporters the way it is in the US.

But, they also spent time talking about how good their reporting is, which is such an American thing to do.

Seconded. What does it say about America's news organizations when they're getting beat to the punch by a pissant Middle Eastern satellite company?
