Not only that,,,, but who knows what kind of asshole he'll prop up and then attempt to rig the election with? Its not like he isn't good at doing exactly that.

I think his strategy is to make enough concessions to break the will of the protesters. Some people will be more steadfast, but others might think they've got enough and it's time to go home.

But, I think for the most part, things will keep up. The message has been consistently that Mubarak must go now, not that he must go later. And, with his crack down on communication and travel, it's unlikely anyone thinks they'll get a fair shake between now and September, and then at the polls.

On a lighter note, craigslist is assisting in the search for new cabinet prospects.

    People to Mubarak: GTFO.

Mubarak to the people: No, you GTFO.

Methinks this will be the climax of the whole thing.

How has the mob not marched on the palace? They have to know that Mubarak is trying to wait them out. The protests were working because they were growing, but as soon as it stagnates, even as a crowd of a million, it starts losing power.

I'll let the irony simmer for a bit.

There's gunfire in Alexandria according to AJE. Clashes between anti- and pro-Mubarak protesters.

Quite frankly, Mubarak's an idiot if he thought that speech would be enough - it only riled people up. It was taped anyway, according to the Guardian.

It looks like a Google executive, Wael Ghonim (head of marketing for Middle East & North Africa...in town for a conference), was arrested/kidnapped by plain clothed security forces in Cario.

Well, Obama's speech was disappointing. Why hold a press conference to say nothing?

It had to be a slap in the face to Egyptians for Obama to praise the role of technology without acknowledging Mubarak's communication blackout.

How much further do you think he could have practically gone? Not to be a dick, I'm really curious. As far as I could tell that was about as supportive as he could be from his current position.

I think it would have been more helpful to not say anything at all, rather than to just say the same thing again.

Yeah, it doesn't take a mass revolt for our government to order Facebook, Twitter and AT&T to fall in line.

Did you see the video of the Nile Bridge conflict? A mob of protesters forced a pretty big police presence off the bridge while under fire from fire hoses and tear gas.

I don't think they're going to go to all out armed conflict, because of the delicate balance they have with the military, but they really do need to up the ante. So far they've had the momentum on their side, but now the million man march became the million man stand in place, and when Mubarak refused to step down, the response was "We'll do something about this on Friday."

And people said American values would never be embraced in the Middle East.

By the way, BL1Y - I'm rather enthralled by the romance of the story, but I'm getting rather concerned about you. Are you still as unemployed as you were before? And if so, how do you continue to afford a cable subscription with Al Jazeera?

Americans know themselves too well. We never plan to start anything on Friday. Friday is an excuse to wait until Monday.*

With the transportation issues going on, maybe it makes sense to give people time to get to Cairo, but the potential to lose steam just seems too great. Tempers cool, people get tired, hungry, they have real life issues to deal with that call them away, and the international audience gets bored.

Ahmed: Oh hey Omar, what's new with the revolution?
    Omar: Nothing.

    THE END

(*Except in legal practice, where Friday means you just got assigned something a partner forgot to give you a month ago, but now needs to be done immediately, because on Monday the deal its for is being canceled and you have to stop billing.)

And yeah, as unemployed as before. Maybe even less so. And I'm using the free online broadcast. It's amazingly stable for a news service that's been banned and has its reporters arrested and equipment seized. They're reporting from a virtual war zone, while American media tends to just point the camera at a laptop open to a blog or YouTube.
