I think the big thing about Goldfinger was the fact that it had the first really tricked out piece of kit from "M"... the famous Aston Martin DB5. Back in the day, that was pretty high tech, and really had a lot of "wow" attached. Sure, it doesn't hold up to the current effects and gadgetry, but I think it kind of ushered in an era of Bond and his spy toys.
Roger Moore will always be my favorite Bond because he was my first. I think Sean Connery is the one who has played him the best and he is so freaking hot and smooth that I can totally buy women's clothes practically falling off anytime he's near. Pierce Brosnan should have been my favorite Bond because I loved him so much as Remington Steele. And I did enjoy him as Bond. I just enjoyed him more as Steele. I'd have to review a list of the various Bond girls, but the one that came immediately to mind was Maryam D'Abo from the Living Daylights. She was achingly beautiful. Although it is hard to look at pictures of her now without thinking of her sister and the annoying character she played on Wonder Years.
I think the cheese is part of the appeal. Killing a girl by spray painting her gold? C'mon if that isn't some diabolical shit. And let's not forget one of the best Bond lines ever - "You expect me to talk, Goldfinger?" "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!" I love that line.
It's definitely up there. My favorites probably go like this: 1. The World is Not Enough 2. Thunderball 3. Skyfall 4. A View to a Kill 5. Goldfinger/Diamonds are Forever I really like You Know My Name but it really doesn't seem very "Bondish" to me. A good Bond song is something that you would hear played at the type of swanky clubs Bond would frequent, which You Know My Name is not. Then again, I suppose you could say the same for A View to a Kill.
How do you leave Live and Let Die out of that list? It was the first Bond song to be nominated for Academy Award, wasn't it?
And Dances With Wolves beat Goodfellas and Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction. Yeah not really seeing that the Academy always makes the best choices with these things. Because let's be honest, that song didn't get nominated because it's especially awesome, it got nominated because it was a Paul McCartney song.
For Your Eyes Only is required to be my favorite Bond song for nostalgia purposes, but I do love Live and Let Die.
Most of the theme songs are very poor. Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, and View to a Kill are probably the standouts. Never got the rave over 'Skyfall' - I found it mundane, even if Adele sang it.
I have no idea how many millions they had to fork over to get a band with the prestige of A-HA to record a Bond song. Cornell's song is my favourite, hands down. Skyfall might be the best song, but You Know My Name is one I'll blast in my car. Jack White's piece of shit was the worst, and I think the "classic" song from Goldfinger is wildly obnoxious.
And, Shakespeare In Love beat Saving Private Ryan. But, I know that Live and Let Die is a great song, I was just making a point that others also know it's a great song. Therefore, your list was wrong.
I finally got around to watching Skyfall the other night, and it made me realize why Craig's Bond feels off: He's too old for the stories they're telling. If they were going to do a relaunch and set the movies at the beginning of Bond's career they should've cast a younger actor to play Bond. Watching the way Craig portrayed Bond in Skyfall made it seem that he was an old, worn-out agent nearing the end of his career - especially with some of the themes of old vs. new in the movie. A late-twenties aged Bond would've been much more fitting.
