Today is the 36th anniversary of Ian Curtis' death. I was obsessed with them when I was in high school and I still enjoy listening to them. But being in my 40s, writing a song called "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at the age of 23 seems pretty brutal.
This is my favorite band, or at least two of its members, remixing Bob Dylan in honor of his 75th birthday. They're a tough listen, as is this remix but I think it's worth it. https://soundcloud.com/anmlcollective/dont-think-twice-its-all-right-animal-collective-remix
I have been absolutely obsessed with this song for the last few days; it's stuck in my head, in a good way. Last night I listened to it on repeat for several hours. Them riffs...
So I was drinking the other night and read something about Velvet Underground and decided to order their first cd, Velvet Underground and Nico. For some reason I've not been exposed to them, even though I'm in their target audience based on the other stuff I like. I got the cd yesterday and it's terrible. I don't get it at all. "Herion" is the only decent song on there, which is the one I heard before buying it. I'm baffled.
I've literally listened to this song at least a dozen times today. Not gonna lie, I dig Seth's braids.
Woo. New Blackberry Smoke album out in October. If you don't know Blackberry Smoke, imagine that AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd had a music baby, then abandoned that baby and it was raised by the Black Crowes.
So I've loved this song for a long time now and I was listening to it before but I only just realised she had a whole bunch of solo stuff as well that's pretty sweet. As part of Lamb Solo A cover of PJ Harvey
A.V. Club has this fun thing where they have a list of songs that bands have to cover. Sometimes they're awful but sometimes they're awesome like this Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' version of "Everybody wants to rule the world." I think it captures the power of the song without all the over production of the original. http://www.avclub.com/video/ted-leo-and-the-pharmacists-cover-tears-for-fears-38869
I was listening to "Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother and the Holding Company on Youtube, when I dozed off. I woke up a couple of hours later, only to hear a woman with a beautiful voice singing, but it wasn't Janis Joplin. It was a very pleasant awakening. I've been listening to this band's music, and I think everyone should check them out. Here's a great example:

Fun fact: I hooked up with the lead singer a couple times when we were in college. It's been quite enjoyable watching her get more well known. Another board member sent this song to me directly a few months ago saying "Oh I think you'd like this." Sure do, pal.
Glad this thread is getting some more run. I'm a country music nerd. Songwriting and storytelling. That being said, this is still my favorite song of the moment: Since I haven't contributed to this thread in a while, here's what's inspiring me right now: Spoiler: get your itunes ready I see big things for Caroline Jones next year. She's had a few albums that were more finding her sound, but then she nailed it with "Tough Guys." (Fun fact: she wrote the song and played every instrument except for bass and drums): Carly Pearce - Every Little Thing. She got some fame from Josh Abbott's "I Wasn't That Drunk," but ELT was a single she just wrote up and tossed out. It stuck. Her EP is really good too. (Fun fact: "I Wasn't That Drunk" was written by Emily Weisband, who sings on Drew Baldridge's "Rebound." She's also stunningly beautiful.) Drake White. Dude got some chops. Hell of a songwriter too. I put my son to sleep each night by singing him "Makin Me Look Good Again": Margo Price. She's a badass. Her album Midwest Farmer's Daughter is a must buy. She'd kick your ass, drink you under the table, take all your chips and you'd ask her to do it again the next day. "4 Years of Chances" is a meaty song that you could easily see coming from the opposite end in someone like Toby Keith.
