Never heard of this band before until recently - trippy trip in the Wayback machine . . . I grew up in Macon, GA, and though I don't live there anymore, every now and then I listen to Jessica Walden's podcast(?) of her Thursday night show on the Creek FM that's based in Macon. (Yay, internet.) Jessica is niece of Phil Walden and daughter of Alan Walden, who founded Capricorn Records, who brought us The Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker Band, Jonathan Edwards and many others. (Phil was also Otis Redding's manager until Otis' death in 1967 and Capricorn was formed a few years after that.) Capricorn had executive offices in one part of downtown Macon and the studio was several blocks away. Halfway in between was a club called Grant's Lounge (still there, and instrumental (ha!) in launching the careers of several bands. Jessica interview Ed Grant (son of the founder, current owner) about that time, and brought up White Witch. Imagine you took David Bowie, Wet Willie and Black Sabbath and merged them together. That is White Witch. They would do a full Glam Rock show in tiny Grant's with pyrotechnics and everything. ( think they even opened for Black Sabbath once.) Don't Close Your Mind And I'm Leaving It's So Nice To Be Stoned
How did it take me this long to finally listen to Chris Stapleton?? I deeply hate bro-pop country, so this kind of stuff is refreshing.
I don't know what it is about this, I really don't care much for Hip Hop made these days but the new lo-fi stuff is pretty catchy (listen to the second verse) And in totally different music, I have been listening to these guys quite a bit lately.
Love Rival Sons. I'm so glad I was wrong. The song in the IHTSBIH trailer was this one from After the Fire:
Leo Moracchioli makes some awesome rock/metal covers. Check it out. Some of the funniest stuff he does is with his daughter. Spoiler He also had a Pantera cover band:
For a musician, I'm very lazy when it comes to finding new music. But sometimes I use Shazam just to remember some cool shit I hear on the radio. I really need to be more proactive about new music. It's like when somebody says "OMG YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS," I purposefully avoid it just to spite them. Ends up keeping me from good shit. Awesome band name.... Turns out this one is on a TV commercial, and I didn't know it. But it's funky. Another band that everybody has told me to listen to, and I'm just getting around to it. Here's another version of it, with a public school choir that I wasn't expecting to be so good. I like how the bass player is obviously impressed: And I love this track. The vocal production on the harmonies is so smooth and full but it doesn't feel overbearing, even though there's a shitload of stacked harmonies.
So, these guys have basically become the only band anyone at my work is talking about. I think they're really good, I've just heard way too much of them in the last few months.
Danger Boy and others, check out Tyler Childers. I think he surpasses Isbell, and I've been a fan of Isbell for many years. He only has about two real music videos, neither of which I think are his best songs. First, a great song about meditation. Then a song about gold, desperation, murder, drugs and drink.
I went deep down a youtube music rabbit hole this morning and found this tortured man. When someone lives through bad and puts it down on paper with just a few notes, I can really appreciate it. Not everyone can, and be thankful if you can't, cause getting through some things is down right severe.
Was putting together music for my father's memorial service, this song is lovely and thoughtful and perfect. It also got stuck in my brain.
