I got into fIREHOSE way back in the day when I was a punk rock 8th grader, but kind of forgot about them. I just recently rediscovered their album "Ragin', Full-On" and holy shit is it fantastic. It's a travesty these guys never blew up. Their music is hard to describe - bass-heavy indie-punk-jazz-funk glory along the same vein as the Minutemen, although I actually prefer fIREHOSE. It's tough to find any of their music with decent quality on youtube, but 'Sometimes,' 'Brave Captain,' and 'The Candle and the Flame' are all fantastic songs and worth giving a listen to if you can find them. I cannot recommend this band strongly enough, and I think I would actually judge someone negatively as a person if they told me they didn't like this band at all.
Patsy Cline. She's damn good. Listen to a bit more than just "Walking After Midnight". She's good at covering Hank Williams songs, to boot.
I had to go into the city on Wednesday to finish closing an office and I listened to the entire Man with a Movie Camera album by Cinematic Orchestra on the train ride in. The combination of grim and powerful, yet upbeat, throughout the whole thing seemed like a perfect soundtrack at the time. The last time I listened to the whole album, I was walking through this... Edit: Here's my favorite song off that album
Ladyton- Seventeen (Soulwax Remix). If I understand it correctly it's probably the most elegantly blunt attack on the modeling industry I've ever heard.
Got hooked on Late Night Alumni lately. Right now, listening to Stereolab's "Oscillons from the Anti-Sun". Also listening to Wilco's new album "Wilco"... another fantastic job by Tweedy and the gang.
I've had a month and a half long boner for Between the Buried and Me "The Great Misdirect." Aside from that, fans of post-rock/experimental will dig The Mercury Program "Chez Viking".
Over the past year I've gone from listening almost exclusively to hip hop to mostly roots reggae, though in the past few months I've been rediscovering classic rock and getting in to old jazz and lately stuff like this: Carole King - So Far Away
My two go to's for music right now are Irish folk singer Christy Moore and also The Pogues/ Shane MacGowan. I also checked out Them Crooked Vultures. Two thumbs up. My iPod is a serious blend of all genres of music, for those wondering at the vast difference between those listed above.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of older Modest Mouse. Mainly the live stuff that I can find and the cd Baron Von Bullshit rides again cd. Here is the song Paper Thin Walls from that cd...If you wait til the end there is a pretty funny rant on Freebird. Spoiler I've also been listening to the Tom Gabel (from Against Me!) solo EP Heartburns. Some of his stuff can get a little preachy and political at times, but it's mostly really good. Here is the video for Harsh Realms. Spoiler
Yacht: I never heard of them before last year when they opened for The Yeah Yeah Yeah's. It's basically some gay dude and a Casio coupled with a semi-hot girl who raps and sings. It's a lot like the Talking Heads meet DEVO. This version is kind of low energy compared to their concerts, where they both jump around the stage and scream the lyrics into their mics. I can't get this song out of my head.
Mother Love Bone. This band was the genesis of all of the awesome rock music that came out of Seattle in the 90's. The album Temple of the Dog was made in memory of their lead singer, Andrew Wood. Both Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam played in this band.
Probably one of the best techno bands out there (wish they didn't sell out to Kanye West though..) would be Daft Punk. Interstella 5555 is just amazing to watch. I love that it is a whole movie with a plot and no dialogue, just Daft Punk songs.
Nothing but "Merry Muthafuckin' Xmas" by Eazy-E, from December through NYE. Best Christmas song, ever.
Crazy Wolf suggested them and I've completely fallen in love with these guys. This song is like the inside of my head..
Mind Eraser, No Chaser is such a badass track. Is it even possible to listen to this track without headbanging? I still prefer Queens of the Stone Age, but that song is mint.
Slim Harpo, specifically "I'm a King Bee". Can't find the exact version I'm listening to online, the bass is a bit off on this one but the voice is closer to my version than the only other Youtube bit I found:
