Yea, there is also the risk of pump failure and leakage as well. They're also super weird to manipulate inside the case because those tube connections are surprisingly inflexible.
Ah, okay... I might just do some overclocking (it would be a first for me), but otherwise I may stick to air cooling. Yeah, it'll be a couple/few months so I'll wait on the 3080. Didn't know it's actually going to be cheaper.
Yeah, most chips in the last 5 or so years are designed to enable over-clocking, so it should be pretty easy if you’re looking to get a little extra power for some new AAA game or something. If you’re more of an enthusiast and are planning to push the clock speeds even higher, then water-cooled might be useful at that point. It just depends on what you want to do.
The big, high-performing air coolers are fine for general overclocking as well. They might not let you push your 4 GHz chip to 5 GHz, but they'll let you get some performance benefits. I never really saw enough benefit to water coolers. If they break, they basically cease cooling entirely, which means your chip is going to get screaming hot in a hurry, and if something leaks you're going to get coolant all over your computer and floor. Whereas a big air cooler is still reasonably effective at cooling when the fan stops working, and nothing can leak. They definitely don't look as cool and they're big and bulky, so small cases can be challenging. But they're simple and effective.
I'd also agree with air cooling over water. My Noctua NH-D15 by far out performs the Corsair AIO I had previously installed, and even with overclocking my CPU is sitting at a comfortable temp constantly. Granted the colour scheme isn't great, but considering they have now brought out an all black version it might be time to update.
I've been considering replacing the stock intel cooler in my SFF box with a Noctua, but not sure since fitment is hard, and there is very little headroom. It's pushing up to just under 80C with the stock when I've got it loaded right up.
I had the low profile Noctua in a SFF case and it worked great. I'm pretty sure it was the NH-L12S. The fan fit under the cooling fins so it requires very little space. Much quieter, too.
I just checked out the temps with the boxed cooler and damn, the intel boxed coolers are the hottest of garbage. I think I'm gonna pick up that noctua
I think it was a legit piece, though... it's not magic, it's just powerful and relatively cheap. He is looking at it from an 8k gaming perspective, so if you're doing purely 4k (or less) then it's probably going to be much, much better.
What was more interesting to me was how the games aren't really handling 8k yet, especially with the pre-rendered cut scenes, etc.
Yeah, the current barriers for entry for true 8K on both the consumer and producer side is just so high at this point, it’s almost pointless to highlight it other than the “what can be/what will be” factor.
Why did Windows 10 do away with the Date Modified calendar widget in Windows Explorer? Is there any other way to search by date other than typing out the whole Datemodified: 1/1/2020..5/1/2020 string?
Power went out at the shop last night and I came in to the computer locked in ASUS UEFI BIOS Utility Advanced Mode. Can't get past that screen. Called my computer repair guy and he's like "hmmm that's not good."
Figure out what the key to launch into BIOS on an ASUS laptop is and see if you can set it to Legacy BIOS.
Back ups? What are those? haha. But with so much stuff being cloud based, I have virtually everything I need already back on. Yeah, could've been the power going out in conjunction with shitty electrical wiring in this 60 year building.
Every computer and expensive piece of electronics I own has a cheap battery backup attached to it that performs basic power conditioning.
