I had a fantastic Ethiopian meal at a place called Semhar near the Jordaan. We were offered seconds. When have you ever been offered seconds at a restaurant? If you do go there, don't order two of the African beers they carry at once. They are sweet. Really sweet. Like, man, I'm real stoned and this shit is too sweet, sweet. Here's their website: http://www.semhar.nl/ I know it's in Dutch but I bet you can figure out which tab means address. Also - seriously awesome sandwiches at this place if you are nearby and want a great cheap lunch. They have crazy gourmet ingredients and it'd be well worth a visit. It's located a couple blocks south-ish of the Anne Frank house: http://www.hartenkaas.nl/ After typing this post, I realized I didn't do much in Amsterdam besides get slightly stoned and walk around the city. And obviously these places aren't necessarily that unique, just good and affordable.
I posted this earlier in the thread, they might be of interest to you. Think i posted some more general dutch info in this thread as well, can't remember that well. I suggest trying some herring with onions on a bun, it's really great for a fast little snack / lunch. EDIT: if you are looking for something specific you can always PM me, and i'll see if i know / can find anything.
Going to Cancun this summer for a stupid wedding. The wife and I are spending another week there for vacation. Pretty sure we're going to try to get a place on the North Beach of Isla Mujeres, anyone have experience on this island? Is it as legit as the internet makes it out to be? I mean, you can rent golf carts by the day. Or is it worth making a trip down to Cozumel or some place else? We're not looking for the huge hotel / drink your face off environment that's in the hotel district of Cancun. I've been there, and I know the beaches are fucking awesome.
Stay in a hostel and don't spend all your time in one place. Apparently, this raises your status as a human being.
"Touristy" Cozumel kinda sucks, except for the $1 beers that you can find a block back from the main drag. However, I know someone who hired a car and driver for the day for like $125 and said it was amazing. Checked out a couple of ruins, a couple beaches and some local food. He really enjoyed it.
You do understand you haven't truly experienced a different culture or country until you get shitfaced with a bunch of other English speakers and fuck an okay-at-best girl in a filthy bathroom, right? Cozumel is fun, but I don't think there's anything there that makes it unique vs. any other Mexican Caribbean island.
In three months I'm going to South America with three friends on a post-college trip. We're spending roughly a week each in Peru, La Paz, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janiero, staying mostly in hostels. Any tips for places to see or things to do? We're already doing Machu Picchu, whitewater rafting in Peru, and biking the most dangerous road in Bolivia.
I'm thinking about going to Puerto Rico for a week in March. If I go, I'll be staying in a vacation rental (probably a 4 person apartment in/around San Juan) to save money and immerse myself in the culture. I'm looking to explore the island and lounge on the beach by day, and party by night (hopefully with a younger crowd), so being in close proximity to those things would be ideal. Has anyone been there that could give me some advice?
I'm contractor that will return to the US in the middle of May and I was thinking of rescheduling my return flight so as to take two weeks off in Europe on my way home. I'm not looking to party, mainly someplace that has personality, interesting people as well as things to see, good food, and beer. Essentially just a couple weeks to relax somewhere and decompress. Some areas that've crossed my mine include Normandy, Italy, Spain, or Portugal. Conversely, I thought some locations in Eastern Europe might not be a bad idea either as to not blow everything I've saved over the past six months on the exchange rate with the Euro. Maybe Prague and then Poland. Essentially, I don't have any one location set in my mind as a place I have to visit. Ideally, I'd like to see a few places, but I don't want to spend half the trip traveling from city to city. Probably 3-5 stops max, however I don't want to sit on a beach for two weeks either. So in a nutshell, any thoughts or suggestions where and how to spend two weeks in Europe are welcome AFHokie
I'm going to be heading to China (for 2 weeks) and we're hoping to visit both Beijing and Shanghai, maybe a little Great Wall action. Does this sound feasible considering we've only got a couple of weeks? I'm also not sure about how to travel from Beijing to Shanghai (or vice versa), does anyone know what the public transport is like, I'm they will have road/rail links but which is the best way to go? I haven't ruled out flying between them but it seems like the least fun option. Finally any advice about what to do/where to go/eat/drink is appreciated!
Planning on going to Thailand next August (I know it'll be hotter than hell, but it's the only time I have to go). I'll be going a few weeks after getting back from a year in Afghanistan so I definitely plan on enjoying some of the "entertainment" Thailand has to offer. At the moment I'm planning on 3-4 days in Bangkok (it'll be a side trip from visiting my dad in Singapore) and I'd like to go to Pattaya for 2-3 days as well. Right now my plan is to carve out one morning/early afternoon to do all the cultural shit and spend the rest of my time cavorting with hookers and attending Muay Thai fights. Any advice (other than "wrap it up")??
In Shanghai just get taxis everywhere. Even a 15 mile cross-town taxi will run about $5. Get your hotel concierge to write your destinations for the day on individual business cards and hand these to the drivers.
I'm going to be in Milwaukee for the next three months. Does anyone have any recommendations on things to do, to see, places to eat and grab a drink? Thanks.
I'm going to Atlanta in a few weeks to visit my sister. We're planning on going climbing a lot, but does anyone have destination or restaurant/bar suggestions? She's pretty new there, too and doesn't do much other than classes and climbing.
Me and the woman are going to Cancun on Thursday. We're both 31 and aren't retarded party college kids. Anyone got any dive bar/awesome food tips? PM me. Thanks.
I have the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai, UAE within the next few months. I know Dubai has a plethora of things to explore and attractions to see, although I don't know much about the allure of Abu Dhabi. I've been told the mosque is quite paradisiacal but in regards to other things to tour I am at a complete loss. Suggestions?
I and six friends are going (from London) to New York City on Saturday, for a week revolving around St Patrick's Day. Aside from general debauchery, does anyone have any tips for seven lads visiting the city? And, in particular, any pro tips for Paddy's Day in NY (like how to avoid the amateur hour drinkers)?
Omaha Feel kind of funny posting this in the World Travel thread with all of the other places listed here, but Memorial day weekend I am going to be visiting an old girlfriend in exotic Omaha. She is new to the area and as well, unfamiliar with all that Omaha and surrounding areas has to offer. We of course are going to the zoo, but is there anything else(bars, restaurants, outdoor summer activities) that is cant miss? Unlike my other vacations, this will not be alcohol-centric, I don't want to waste a day being hungover. Also are there any Memorial day traditions, i.e a place where everyone goes (lake, river float) to revel?
This isn't really a world travel question, but does anyone have some words to say about the Flagstaff, AZ area? I'm kinda, sorta looking at some places I might want to relocate to after I'm done with school. Weather wise it seems pretty close to where I live now except not as cold[though the same high temps as here], more snow[I like that], and no fucking humidity.
Me and two friends (all 22 years old) are going to Europe in a month for 5-6 months. The first 2/3 months have already been planned. The first week in Paris/Amsterdam. A month with a rental car driving around all of Great Britian. 21 day Contiki trip. A week in Pamplona, Spain for the running with the bulls festival. After that the general plan is to just visit as many countries as possible. Any advice or tips? Places to visit or see? Anything that could add to the trip in any way would be appreciated.
