Can't stress this part enough. Toss your normal conventions of how and where food should be served. The best food I've ever eaten in Asia has come from sketchy looking (to our western eyes) carts and stalls. Also, I've never gotten any sort of food poisoning from said places. Damn, now I'm hungry and I want to buy a ticket.
Exactly. You'll find the food, disgusting as it may look, is actually fresh. The neat places with few patrons are the ones to be scared of. Ah fuck, I just remembered where I stayed: Berjaya Times Square - the times square mall itself is just another mall, BUT, out behind it (Jalan Bukit Bintang) they convert the whole street into a giant open-air food court at night. Go there, eat some grilled and seasoned stingray. Fucking fantastic. Oh also, if you need ANY electronics (real ones and fake ones, but the fakes are declared, so you won't buy an ipod and find out its not an ipod...) go to Low Yat Plaza. It's a mall, 6 stories high with nothing but electronics. From any manner of cable or adapter right up to original Apple products. Don't worry, in there And if you're still looking for cheap accommodation, the Equator Hostel rocks. It's REALLY clean (as in eat off the floor clean) and also offers double rooms for some downtime with the lady friend. The girl who runs it is ridiculously friendly and will give you loads of pointers if you're interested. Also always had a decent crowd of people, as opposed to some of the fuckheads I met at hostels in the "drinking" parts of town. It's right next to Berjaya Times Square. Here's the relevant Google Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Berja...l+Territory+of+Kuala+Lumpur+Malaysia&t=m&z=16
I was there about 5 years ago, and I had a good time. I had a friend in the city so I don't know the names of almost anywhere we went. There was one bar on top of a building where we could see the towers that had the coolest bathroom. The urinal was just a piece of glass that was looking down on the city, so it was like you were peeing on the city from 40 stories up. If someone tells you they have a sister/cousin/relative that happens to be very close to where you're from they're part of a scam to get you back to their place and extort money from you. I had two different people in two places try this. I also had some very forward prostitutes approach me. A few on the street, one in a bar (it had a live shark above the bar). Conversation: Tute: Hi how are youuu Pow: Pretty good Tute: You like KL? Pow: It's cool so far. Tute: You bring me back to hotel room. Do anything you waaant. Not much money, how much you haaave? Pow: About 23 cents. What's that get me? Second on the food - it's a unique mix of Chinese, Malay, and Indian. I ate at one restaurant that didn't serve anything that wasn't from a pig, and that was good too. The dim sum was so-so. I had a ABC dessert that was kind of good. If in doubt, just see what the locals order and ask for whatever the locals got. There are a couple of really good food stall streets. In that part of the world the food stalls have the freshest, cheapest, tastiest food. Otherwise the super tiny restaurants are solid too. After a month of eating cheap I went balls out and got a 4-5 star meal for $25, so doing it up is kind of fun too.
I'm taking TheGirl to Vancouver next month for her birthday, so I'm looking for suggestions of things to do and restaurants to eat at (we'll be staying in West End, but we'll be mobile). Also, is it easier to get Canadian currency beforehand, or just use my Visa card the whole time and let them figure out the exchange rate?
Anyone have any substantial experience/knowledge of the Montmartre area in Paris? If so, sharesies? Apparently I may be living there for a bit.
My husband and I are heading to Atlanta this Saturday to Tuesday. Neither one of us has been to the South yet, so I'm pretty excited. We'll probably stay in some downtown hotel, and I was looking for advice on what to do and where to eat (southern food, which I've never had, as well as international). I would like to see a plantation, and can perhaps drag, I mean persuade, my husband to see a Civil war museum/exhibit. I have a licensing exam on Monday, so he'll be on his own, so if you gentlemen could also suggest some things for him to do by himself, that would be great. TLDR: Couple of specific questions - is the Aquarium worth it? Any historical must-sees? Is there a nice plantation worth seeing nearby? Good southern restaurant? A good place to get corndogs? (I must taste this wondrous creation)
Re: Re: World Travel Thread I go down there for training alot, and all I can say is get ready to sit in traffic, its the worst I have ever experienced.
Going to Prague in March for 5 days from the U.S. Any recommendations for fun places to check out? Bars? Sports? Restaurants? Touristy stuff?
Has anyone been to either St. Lucia or Costa Rica? We're trying to decide between the two for our honeymoon. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
When? Been to St. Barth (see wimco.com) a couple times in June (The offseason but everything still open). Easy to get to from PHL via St Maarten. It's French, very european, very romantic, the whole island is a playground instead of one of those super commercial island getaways. If you're going in the fall/winter its grotesquely expensive.
Prague is fucking phenomenal. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're into the backpacker scene, there's an awesome Bohemian cafe / bakery / net cafe / pub called, I think, Bohemia Bagel? Excellent food, and it runs an absolutely berserk pub crawl. I'm generally of mixed opinions about pub crawls, but this one is filled with obscene alcohol consumption, friendly women, copious drug dealers, and general chaos. It starts with flip cup and other drinking games, and ends with absinthe. It's the only time I've ever been bedridden with a hangover at 5pm the next day. Unfortunately I haven't been to Prague in a few years so I'm struggling to remember exactly where we went. The food everywhere was great, endless goulash and hearty stews. Every restaurant, cafe, library, and probably primary school in the city is sponsored by Pilsner Urquell, which is a ridiculously good beer. Buy it by the liter mug. Oh, and they have cocktail stands set up in the street in case you need a quick mojito. There is also the Kostnice Ossuary, a church made of bones located a short train ride from Prague. However, I personally didn't enjoy this at all and was generally freaked out by it. Took me a couple of days to lose the weird feeling I got from it.
On the other hand, I quite enjoyed it. Either way, it's worth going to, because it's unlike anything else you can visit in your life. Just make sure you stay in the centre of old town. The first time I stayed in Prague, our accomodation was hostel 10 minutes from the city. It wasn't nearly as good as the next time when we stayed inside the actual city. The architecture is amazing, and walking through the streets taking in the old feel is a great experience. Second Bohemia Bagel as well. They run most of the daytime walking tours from there too
Orlando, Fucking Florida. Yeah quite the exotic destination eh? My only frame of reference is Disney and that's not where I'll be. Good food, beer, and fun. Places that I could bring a bunch of rowdy late 40's customers and leave them there without one of them being stabbed.
I'm taking a long weekend to go visit a friend who lives in Hoboken NJ. I know there are several New Yorkers here, so where can I find some decent eats and a few good bars. Relatively close to Hoboken if possible please, and low to mid prices. I've done NYC as a family trip before and did all the touristy stuff so now I'd like a few insider tips. My buddy works on the road and is only home about 1 week a month and skateboards most of his free time, so he really doesn't have all that many suggestions.
Can anyone recommend a good vacation destination on the Gulf of Mexico? My girlfriend and I would like to take a weeklong vacation this summer and we want to find someplace with decent beaches, good dining and entertainment/nightlife. We're both in our mid-20s, so we're not looking for kids-type activities, and we don't exactly have a ton of money to blow (we'll be driving from Ohio instead of flying (!)). I've been to Destin before, and I wouldn't mind going back, so we want as good as or better than Destin.
There's a nice Hyatt in Bonita Springs between Naples and Ft. Meyers. Hyatt Coconut something. Sanibel Island is another option.
